There’s this place across from the library in Downtown Toledo called ‘Lowrider Café’. I had heard about it via social media, but didn’t really know much about it beyond that. Then came this past Friday night. I am sitting home, and Mom gets a phone call that the hall that was reserved for a certain six-year old’s birthday party realized there was a conflict and was forced to cancel, two days before the event. It was a setback to say the least. Mom instantly started looking around for a place quick on short notice. Most places around took advantage of the situation and were asking for 500, 600, in some cases 650-700 total for a fee since it was short notice. While I am not against anyone making a living and conducting business, that’s truly taking advantage of people. Then at 4am, a guy named Jacob Estrada got in touch. He and mom talked and worked out a showing of the room. After we both got off work Saturday afternoon, Mom and I went downtown to see it. As soon as we walked in, we knew we had the right place. The room was perfect and even had art and hand-painted murals on the walls (which is right up my alley). They worked out a deal and we now had a place for the birthday party. Let me tell you, a bunch of screaming six-year-old girls may not exactly be everyone’s cup of tea, but to see how happy that little girl was to have a place to celebrate her birthday made it all the worthwhile from the struggle that took place to get there, but do you know what impressed me the most? He (Jacob) knew our situation and unlike other halls and places who were attempting to upcharge us, he didn’t take advantage of us. He kept the price incredibly fair. He was truly a professional and we couldn’t have asked for a better person or place to do business with!
We had an absolutely wonderful experience, and I just want to say how much we truly appreciated everyone at Lowrider Cafe in Downtown Toledo for what they allowed us to do and make happen this past Sunday. Also, the food is amazing. We had an opportunity to try Tamales that were made completely from scratch and to say that they were truly the best tamales I’ve ever had in my life would be an understatement. The chicken was perfectly cooked and had so much flavor. It was truly a wonderful experience, and I can’t wait to take Mom there for lunch very soon. 🍴🍴🍴
If you are looking to book a small get-together, or kids birthday party, or maybe even just a small office party, check into “Lowrider Café”. Jacob and the whole crew over there are great people and will work hard for you. I truly can’t wait to go back. THANK...
Read morethe prices are way too high for what they give you. the vegan menu should not be as expensive as the normal menu when meat and cheese are obviously more expensive.
i had a quesadilla there once, and on top of being not a full meal's worth, they don't seem to get what a quesadilla is supposed to be. it came with lettuce and sour cream, both of which were inside the quesadilla, and warm as a result. the overwhelming flavor of it was hot mushy lettuce and colby cheese. most other mexican restaurants will eagerly give you chip salsa as a complimentary side, but here they might not even provide you with silverware, let alone anything to dip your quesadillas in.
i also tried their coffee which was not anything special, and required me to get up after it was brought out to me, to ask for cream and sugar, then again to ask for something to stir it with.
i gave it another go recently and got the mean green machine off the vegan menu. this is a $12 burrito, not especially large, and without any of the higher cost ingredients that would normally justify that kind of price. it is least better than their quesadillas, but noticably lacked seasoning, sides, and the waitresses were once again not on their a game as far as providing utensils,...
Read moreI'm so glad to have finally given this place a try!! It is hands down the best Mexican cuisine I have had. And the price makes it even better!
This cozy restaurant on Michigan Ave is truly a hidden gem.
NOTE this restaurant relies a lot on self service. We sat at the bar so helped ourselves to water refills from the cooler nearby and napkins/boxes when we were ready. If I had not done this and expected traditional table service then I would not be making such a raving review.
Get the guac! If you've been disappointed elsewhere, this stuff surely won't! Our server made it right there in front of us, and the flavors of this chunky guac were so balanced.
The chips are truly homemade! "Be careful, hot" is a warning you should heed when these come straight out of the frier.
They had spectacular beans and rice. I really can't think of a complaint with my entire experience.
Every worker was so kind and willing to share in the work of each other. We were never unattended and the owner (presumably) was on top of it all.
I would support this restaurant again and again and again. Truly refreshing after what seems like so long of just "eh" dining...
