Gf and I walked by and upon hearing the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song blasting through the speakers, decided we had to give this place a try. We asked for a menu which wasn't available, so we opted to taking a picture of the menu posted on the wall instead. I decided on the beef brisket on brioche with a side of kimchi potato's, fries, and a brew. While she had the BBQ chicken sandwich with a side of brussel sprouts and strawberry lemonade.
Once we placed our order which amounted to roughly $41.87, a young man whom I'd assume was the cook only because I saw him manning the grill earlier came up to the counter, pointed at my shirt which had an emblem of a certain game I'm fond of and said, "You like that? Get the f* out!" My gf later informed me of what he had said. If I would have known at the time I would have requested my money back and promptly, "gotten the f* out of there."
We sit at the table and wait the 15ish minutes for the food to arrive. I'm going to cut to the chase. The beef brisket looked and tasted as if it was half chewed, and then regurgitated onto the bed of Cole slaw on my brioche. It was lukewarm and had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The potato salad was unsalted and lacking flavor as well. The only good part of the meal was the french fries, and the brew. Her BBQ chicken was actually quite tasteful, cept the menu didn't indicated in any way whatsoever that it would be served on a bed of Cole slaw (which contains ingredients that an expecting woman shouldn't eat). The brussel sprouts were in her words, "amazing," & the lemonade was actually quite delicious.
Normally I wouldn't take the time to leave a review of such distaste, but the cook had poor manners and should have not spoken to a new customer formulating his first opinions of their establishment like that.
And the food...
Read moreHaven't been to Pik Nik for a few years so figured that I'd stop in today and get takeout. Ordered the Smoked Half Chicken Jerk Style, the St. Louis Ribs, and Cornbread.
The Jerk Chicken was tender and delicious. The rib meat was tender - came right off the bone, but unfortunately wasn't tasty at all. There was rub on it, but the bark just didn't have any taste and needs some work. The Cornbread was very good.
I had another experience with this meal that I found rather concerning. There was a row of different bbq sauces on the counter. It had some interesting sauces like Sriracha flavored and Hot Sauce. I asked them if they could give me a small little cup of each (as they do with their regular bbq sauce). They initially resisted that completely, and then agreed to do so for a $2 upcharge each. I declined. What troubles me is these sauces are obviously there for the clientele eating inside the restaurant to use, and there is nothing on the menu about any extra charges for bbq sauces. I also saw one of the employees cutting and handling the corn bread with his bare hands while others had gloves on (which they should).
Returned yesterday Dec 2022. Ordered the Smoked Half Chicken Jerk Style, the St. Louis Ribs, and the Smoked Andouille Sausage. Once again, the Chicken was outstanding - couldn't have been more delicious; the Sausage was also outstanding; but again, the ribs were not very good. They were tender, but they lacked taste and had absolutely no rub or bark at all. A consistent...
Read moreI’m only basing this review on what I ordered and what I saw as I waited. This is mediocre, criminally overpriced “barbecue”. I got the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich for $17, which somehow does not include a side w it, not even a measly ramekin of coleslaw. From the ones I saw displayed, though, the sides did not look very appetizing, to be honest. The sandwich itself was underwhelming, and it wasn’t the NHC we’ve all come to know and love; this version was SLATHERED in a very generic, tepid “spicy” bbq sauce. I asked for a side of the “house bbq” sauce, and it was definitely not homemade; either Stubb’s or KC Masterpiece if I had to guess. But the absolute worst part of the sandwich was that the chicken breasts were not fresh. The consistency was that of a cheap piece of grainy, chewy chicken, and I’m guessing they were previously frozen (and definitely not organic, but I don’t know if they make that claim, to be fair). I wanted to get a sampler of their ribs and brisket, but was dissuaded because the only way you could do so was if you ordered a 1/2 lb each two-meat combo plate…for almost $55! I’ve never seen bbq prices THAT high, and I’ve been to a lot of spots across the country, ranging from world-famous to local, mom- & pop-owned. I don’t know if the owner of Mint, who I like and respect from back in the day, still oversees this spot as well, but if he does…You’re a LOT better than...
