Thoughtful Eats in Tight Quarters – A Review of The Taco Project in Tarrytown
If you’re passing through Tarrytown or a local looking for a reliable spot for elevated casual dining, The Taco Project is worth a visit—especially if you value flavorful, thoughtfully prepared food. Part of a small regional chain (with locations in Pleasantville and Tarrytown), this taqueria has built a solid reputation for its creative combinations and high-quality ingredients.
The Tarrytown location, however, does come with caveats. It’s a tight squeeze—what one might call a “squash and a sneeze”—with limited seating that can feel a bit cramped, particularly for families or groups. Some tables are wobbly, and at peak hours, you may find yourself standing around waiting for a seat. That said, during the warmer months, outdoor seating significantly improves the experience, offering more space and a more relaxed vibe.
Food-wise, The Taco Project delivers. The chorizo taco has long been a personal favorite, although I do miss their earlier version that featured hearty chorizo chunks with mango—a combination that had a depth and brightness now slightly dulled by the switch to a more ground, uniform filling. Still, it’s undeniably delicious. Other standouts include the salmon taco and pulled pork, and the rotating combinations often surprise in the best way.
The main drawback is the price-to-portion ratio. At roughly the same price point as many Manhattan taquerias, you get only two tacos per order rather than the typical three, which can leave you wanting more—especially if you’re used to generous street-style taco servings.
Overall, The Taco Project in Tarrytown is a flavorful, inventive stop that punches above its weight in quality, even if the ambiance and value don’t always match up. If you’re looking for a quick, tasty bite and don’t mind cozy quarters (or plan your visit during patio season), it’s...
Read moreThis was the first place we tried on Main Street after coming to Tarrytown for a weekend of urban hiking and photography. We love tacos, so seemed like a failsafe bet, especially because I googled reviews beforehand. It was a very disappointing experience, the only one we had in Tarrytown, I must add. I'm a foodie and used to be a chef, but not that hard to please. Here's why I was so let down. We ordered burrito bowls: grilled chicken for my husband and shrimp for me. Let me preface by saying that coming from NYC, your local bodega will sell you decent Tex-Mex food more times than not. The "grilled chicken" was just shredded rotisserie chicken. There was nothing to flavor it to this particular cuisine, it was just shredded rotisserie in a taco shell. We asked for condiments, which was met with a blank stare. The bowl was served with a clump of rice, which should have at least been fluffed, since I understand that the food needs to be prepared in advance. The were 3 tiny radish sticks. No salsa in a little pot, no condiments of any kind. There was sour cream and queso blanco, but that hardly adds flavor. The black beans looked like they were dumped straight out of the can into the bowl. They weren't cooked or seasoned in any way. What killed me was my shrimp. It was heavily battered, which was NOT mentioned in the menu, and I hate battered seafood. So starved as I was, I sat there digging the tiny shrimp out of their batter jackets. We also got sparkling water in bottles with caps that require an opener, which wasn't provided. I opened the bottles against an outside window sill. The one delicious thing we ate there was guacamole with chips. It made the burrito bowls palatable. It...
Read moreThe food here is ON POINT! We actually have a Taco Project near our home so we had something to compare it to and my 17 yr old son gives it a 10 out of 10. I personally give it an 8.5 out of 10, but that's because my opinion is a bit biased since they know us at the location by my house and add all the veggies in our protein order. Here it isn't like that, you get: rice, beans, crema, cojita cheese cilantro and shaved radish when ordering the burrito bowl; the food is tasty and flavorful and served hot. The lemonade here is 10x better than the lemonade at the location by our home, but don't tell them I said that lol. However, the Horchata in my opinion could be better, it's missing something. The churros were served hot, soft and coated in the perfect amount of sugar and cinnamon. The caramel sauce and chocolate sauce accompanying the churros were amazing.
Needless to say the staff here is super friendly, courteous and aim to assure your dining experience is a great one and that is why we give Taco Project Tarrytown a 5 star rating. Whenever we visit the Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown area we will be sure to...
