I have been a patron of Sal's for many decades. Whenever I am in the area, I stop for slices of Sicilian or a whole pie. I have lived in four states and 20+ towns/cities and have never found anything even remotely comparable to Sal's Sicilian.
Over 50 years or so, there has been no slip in quality although i still remember the old days when the pepperoni was thick like quarters with an occasional chunk on the pizza. Virtually all pizza places have given in to paper thIn slices. If i was just rating the sicilian, I would give a 5+ star review. However, the regular pies are fine, as are other menu items, but nothing unique and I personally would only go out of my way, as I do, for the Sicilian.
While there are tables in the rear to sit and eat, I think of Sals as takeout. Yes, you can bring your food to a table but that would be more out of necessity than desire. At busy times, things can be very chaotic trying to order or pick up food. There is very little space and the old school style of cash only, no POS system and recording orders on a legal pad might seem quaint to some but it can be frustrating for those picking up food who might experience some grumpy service while crammed in a slender hallway.
Sal's has survived and thrived while most of the dining establishments in the village have changed hands over and over and as other pizza places have come and gone. Even at $4 for a slice of Sicilian, that is a bargain for anyone who appreciates the finestSicilian, the size and the cost relative to the area. A Sicilian pie can more than feed my large...
Read moreI've gone perhaps half a dozen times because my wife and kids like it. Otherwise, I'd rather eat cardboard. This is one of those enigma's that continues to operate despite being a hole, with staff and service that holds you in contempt, constantly tries to pick up the clientele and throws the food at you. Sure it's relatively inexpensive and in a convenient place on Mamaroneck Rd., but there isn't anything to be happy about here. On my last visit, for a quick bite with my wife, I ordered a meatball calzone and not to my surprise, the server, let's call him Meatball Joe, grabbed a piece of calzone dough, pre-cooked. He sliced it in half, took one dry pre-cooked meatball, sliced it into multiple pieces, threw it in the oven and then it was shouted to me and I waved him down. A bus-boy of sorts, dropped it on the 1970's version table top and when I looked down, the dry meatball had turned to stone, over dried ricotta cheese with a side of marinara. My jaw dropped. I couldn't believe that anyone could serve this kind of "food" to anyone. I unfortunately wasn't surprised though as they have gotten away with this garbage for years. The pizza is pre-made plain with cheese and if you want anything on it, they take a plain piece, drop the topping on it and throw it in the oven. That isn't the way anyone should make a pizza. It's awful and it looks like the standards of people in the area have dropped below any depressing level that I had even considered. Shame on anyone who eats at this...
Read moreOrdered calzone, garlic bread and lasagna. Garlic bread was pretty good. Calzone small, expensive and barely there. The lasagna was horrible. Tasted like flat 3 day old sour cheese. My wife got sick from it while still at Sal’s. Sick for 3 days after. If you go to Sal’s, have the canned soda. It’s fresh not like the expensive food. The place is dangerous. The staff nasty, service slow. We ordered a soda at the table and had to pay cash on the spot for it during dinner (if you could call this garbage dinner) the worst dining experience since skinning my own food while hunting when I was 16 (that was over 50 years ago) it should have given us a clue when we walked in thirsty and I asked for a soda at the counter and had to pay for it then and there because they wouldn’t or couldn’t add it to our future dinner bill in the seating area. But when paying for dinner at the end someone who seemed like management yelled to the cashier “he as 2 sodas”. I yelled back “I paid cash for the first on when I got here” (of course I paid cash for it, they don’t take cards or any other...
