Eat there at your own risk! I've been going to this place for years now and I no longer can continue to give them my money and this is not the first time I've told myself this but im putting my foot down. NO MORE!!! They are way to overpriced compared to restaurants in the area. They have hidden fees and charges and the chefs inconsistency with certain dishes is completely unbelievable, and even if you ask them and request for them to make sure that the order is done the way they are supposed to... there will almost always be something wrong. I have gone into the restaurant dozens and dozens of times, and I must say that I'm very uncomfortable as an American and I feel that they are biased towards non Latinos, specifically one of the owners of the restaurant. Cafe Rhumba sells the basic dominican breakfast with two eggs, two slices of queso frito, two huge slices of salami, pan con mantaquilla(6 inches) and a heaping portion of mangu and onions, and it includes is an espresso or American coffee and a glass of sunny delight all for $6.95!! El conuco super breakfast has everything except they only include 1 piece of cheese( not 2 like cafe rhumba) and the only addition is that el conuco throws in 2 small pieces of chichiron and two small sausage...but they charge $16.32 for pretty much the same meal. The chicharon and sausage are miniscule and bite size...definitely not worth an extra $9. Or you can go to "El Tipico Restaurant " in Jersey city next to Liberty state park. They serve, amazing mangu, two eggs, 1 salami and 1 cheese for """"$4.00""""" that's it. For $5 you get a coffee and for $6 you get more mangu and 2 cheese and 2 salami instead of one of each. This place beats both of those places. But, bottom line, for $16, i can get 8 eggs, 4 slices of cheese and salami and 4 times the amount of mangu at El Tipico, for the same price El Conuco charges for mangu, 2 eggs, 1 cheese slice, 2 salami, 2 snipits of chicharon and 2 small sausages. And the taste from both places is authentic.... El Conuco has also stopped running its $5.35 whole chicken deal until further notice, so really, unless you like being ripped off, there's no point in going there as there are so many better places in the area and if you're willing to make a little bit of a trip you can get four times the amount of food for...
Read moreI usually come for the "quatro golpes" mangu breakfast. It is one of the best mangu's in the area. Authentic Dominican food hands down. The 4 golpes comes with extra meat (chicharonnes) which is why i get it. The food tastes fresh, the natural oj is fresh. The menu is really pricey for the area, and for the type of things you can get nearby that are equally delicious for substantially cheaper, so i dont typically dine here for anything else. However, when im in the mood for mangu, this is where I like to go. The owner Marcia (not sure if spelled it right) is amazing. She is truly a good natured woman. I like to support her because she owned an amazing hair salon which is nearby, and when she sold it, she opened this restaurant. I still go to my stylist at that salon, but I also like to show love by eating here every so often. Also street parking is great in the area. If you come early you can park right next to the restaurant and watch your car from the window. I like not having to pay the meter if I dont...
Read moreWhatta bummer. I called yesterday to place a big order for 10-15 people all I wanted was rice and gandules with baked chicken and an avocado salad(you know the Spanish way you get in any Spanish restaurant). I ended up getting a small rice tray that could probably feed 4 people and the Chicken is literally for two people only and the avocado salad is literally just 3 cut up avocados I could of done myself getting them at the store cutting it up and putting it in a container. I wish I could upload my pictures on here to show no exaggeration. I also ordered onions in vinegar sauce and they gave me the SMALL container FOR TEN PEOPLE. spent 70 bucks to fed 4 people tops. Maybe only 3. Will never order from here again. First and last. Feel like calling for a damn refund. Smh
edit: changed it to 3 stars instead of one because the food was pretty good and the owner was...
