I had a disappointing and scary experience today with allergen awareness here. I have celiac disease and cannot handle any amount of cross contamination. I make this very clear when I order and make sure to reiterate that my bagel cannot be toasted, must be made with fresh gloves, cut with a clean knife, and prepared on fresh paper. When I ordered today I felt a bit dismissed and annoying about it, but figured maybe the person taking my order was just very familiar with the process and didn’t want to be reminded. I still reiterate every single time that this is a severe allergy because me seeming a bit annoying is nothing compared to what happens when I don’t. My bagel came out toasted with crumbs from gluten bagels in the paper. I had taken a bite before I noticed as normally they are very safe about these things. The staff today seemed completely unconcerned with how serious of a mistake this is - those small procedures are the difference between me and a severe allergic reaction that leaves my stomach in bits for more than a week, fatigued, and literally with flu symptoms. Additionally, long term continued exposure to gluten raises celiacs risk of multiple GI and lymph node cancers. I shouldn’t have to feel like I’m taking a risk by eating at a restaurant that claims to make accommodations for severe allergies. There are staff who I’ve noticed work very hard to make sure nobody anywhere in the chain is contaminating my food and I’m very appreciative of them, particularly the woman with glasses, I’m not sure of her name. She is great and I can tell she understands the severity of these things, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was celiac herself. But the carelessness of the other staff today was unacceptable and dangerous. I hope this review inspires a serious discussion about allergen awareness in this restaurant so this doesn’t happen again. It’s ten seconds out of your day to be safe - either make the accommodations, or be honest that you can’t. It is much...
Read moreI have a issue with the waiting at Shugs.
I’ve noticed that they do not call the orders out in the order they are received. They have ticket numbers to help them. I’ve seen them just make bagels from whatever ticket they pick up they do it. It doesn’t have to be in order. For example, if I’m ticket 200 the number before me is 199 and after me is 201…
I shouldn’t hear 235…. Before 200…. The orders are not being done in order.
They could leave people who order before others waiting on a single bagel or 2 bagels the longest I have waited is 3 hours.
I understand you are busy, but why Can’t you create a better system & do the orders in the way they are received.
Another example, I order online and of course you can expect to wait an actual 2 hours for a bagel. Simply because the people inside the store are standing and waiting then the people who order online are simply just waiting wether that is at the location or not.
If they want people to spend the night for a bagel… I will gladly bring my sleeping bag. (Jokingly)
I do orders for other people through an app called Favor. It isn’t even my own food that makes it even more annoying. The customer sometimes don’t have patience and some do.
If you care about your small business. I suggest implementing a better system that helps you and the customer.
Also, the humans who stand in line and wait for a bagel are built different!
Heads up! So, if you come to Shugs… be prepared for a nice long wait and delicious bagels! The workers are nice and...
Read moreLet me start out by saying my husband and I are diehard bagel lovers. Their social media drew me in; the sandwiches are a food photographer’s dream and I’m sure everyone here is wonderful. I wanted to love this place so badly, but I thought my Shug (bacon, egg, cheese, hashbrown) on an egg everything was surprisingly bland. My husband got a bacon egg and cheese and had the exact same reaction. The cheese they use is American, so it doesn’t taste like much. Skip the cheese or specify what kind of cheese you want. Egg bagels usually have a pretty distinct taste (in addition to the color) and these just don’t have it. I’m sure their proximity to SMU has contributed heavily to their success, and if it’s close to you it’s worth going here instead of Einstein. I noticed some reviews citing Dallas is in “desperate need” of a NY bagel shop, and we certainly can’t have too many, but there are local places that have been here for years that I think have better bagels; not sure where that misconception started. It’s not worth going out of your way to eat here if you are closer to a Cindi’s NY Deli or Benny’s Bagels. Those places honestly have better bagels and are not as crowded, but their drink selection is not as strong as Shug’s (if that matters to you). In short, you live by Shug’s, you’ll love it. It’s not that bad. I probably just needed to heavy hand it with salt and pepper. However, if you live closer to a different local shop—just go there. It will be a...
