Read moreAs someone married to an Austrian, this place certainly scratches an itch while visiting the beautiful village of Vail. The pork shank is really delicious and the veal Gulasch is also on point. The service team is very, clinical, not warm or inviting, very little flavor of true alpine dining and our waitress had a hard time understanding my Austrian native husband pronouncing the menu items. What was really the most disappointing part was their take on the Dampfnudel - a very traditional Austrian sweet dish listed as dessert. Dampfnudel typically does not have any filling and is a very puffy pastry served with vanilla sauce. Germknödel is similar, a fluffy yeast dumpling filled with plum jam, served with melted butter and or vanilla sauce and completely covered in poppyseeds and a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top. What was served here was actually a Germknödel not a Dampfnudel - but it didn’t rise at all and was really flat and unusually dense than light and fluffy. It was also served with vanilla sauce and cherries? The filling was likely plum but there were almost no poppyseeds and it was dripping in sauce rather than a dusting of powdered sugar. Good attempt but really not executed well and certainly a crisscross of these two sweet dishes. High marks for having zirbenschnaps and almdudler. Although owned by Almresi, another Vail Austrian outfit - it really falls short in comparison to service and execution. No need to go back here if you’re looking for a great Austrian experience just head to...
Read moreUpdate: Jul 2022 Drove up to Vail especially to eat here. For the first time ever in over 20 years, the waiter said the chef refused to put a fried egg atop my schnitzel. The waiter was snippy, told me they don't have eggs, then told me they don't put eggs on schnitzel then proceeded to tell me that the current owner have restaurants all over Germany and over 120 employees, etc. No more fresh rolls, you pay for 5 slices of baguette with butter and I was charged $3/each for adding whipped cream on our two desserts. I'm so disappointed and won't be bragging about this place again. The food is still good, but this experience was not. So sad.
Spring and Summer are near and this cozy delicious restaurant is about to get busy. This is my all-time favorite German-Austrian restaurant because the food is always delicious, the rolls/breads are delectably fresh and the desserts are to die for! My favorite dish here is the Schnitzel topped with a fried egg, but there is much on the menu to enjoy. The ambiance when sitting outside on the patio is delightful. I've come to this place many times over the years and although the menu sometimes changes (years ago we enjoyed a Braunschweiger sandwich - rarely served anywhere any more), this still remains a favorite. Hopefully it is for you too! Suddenly I'm in the mood for some Alpen Rose...
