Update: the restaurant reached out to me to apologize and explain. They had an Internet issue, so they did not receive my order in a timely manner. Also, they are changing their menu. They offered me a full refund or a gift card. Such excellent service! Next time I travel to Bristol, I will try them again and will order their specialties. :)

Note: I didn't rate them on "atmosphere" because I got a takeout order.

This was very disappointing. I know the name is Chinese, but the menu has food from various Asian cuisines, so I was excited. I ordered Vietnamese spring rolls and Pad Thai. I arrived a few minutes early to pick up my food and they didn't even know I had ordered online and asked what I ordered and if I had paid. The gentleman was friendly, though.

The food was edible, but not very good. The spring rolls were not rolled well and each one had ONE shrimp. There were some loose peanuts in the to go container, but no peanut sauce. There was a small container of what I would call yum sauce.

The pad Thai was not flavored right and the noodles were a bit gummy. I added some of the yum sauce to improve the taste and texture a bit. There were whole peanuts on one end.

To top it off, the fortune cookie was stale.

The pad Thai portion was big and it came with a side of brown rice, which seemed odd. I have...

Some friends were in from out of town & wanted Chinese food. This was the only table service Chinese restaurant I knew of - or could find online. I hadn't been in a few years because my last couple meals were not good. I told my friends about my past experiences at the restaurant & they opted to give it a chance anyway. We went for lunch. There was only one other table occupied in the restaurant - not a good sign. We were instructed to seat ourselves. The server brought a tablet to the table to take our order & had a TERRIBLE time trying to input our order. He literally asked my friend 4 times what she was ordering. I ordered both meat & vegetable spring rolls for the table & the shrimp & broccoli lunch special for my meal. The spring rolls were phenomenal: piping hot, crispy & delicious! The shrimp & broccoli, not so much. Somehow, the broccoli floret tops were mush & the stems seemed raw. There was so much garlic in the dish, I was picking it off the shrimp & broccoli just to be able to eat it. The fried rice was bland & required quite a bit of soy sauce to flavor it. I felt kinda bad for my friends, but I had warned them. Next time, I'll just explain there is not a decent Chinese restaurant & have them pick something else. The extra chance was a mistake I...

I went to this restaurant a few hours ago and I definitely will not be back. I ordered the Japanese Udon Noodle Soup and as I was eating, I noticed a little dead bug in the soup. I then looked closer at what I thought was pepper or seasoning and every single black speck had legs. There were tens of tiny bugs in my meal.

Edit: After receiving a reply from the owner, I will add a few things for clarity. After noticing the bugs and bringing them to the attention of the staff, they offered only to take that single dish off our bill. We told them that we did not feel that we should have to pay for any of it, and thankfully they did not give us a hard time. We immediately left the restaurant and no one from our party of four ate any more of their meals after I found bugs in mine. More than half of each meal was left on the table. I also find it incredibly odd, and I am honestly quite offended, that it has been said that the kitchen staff didn't find anything strange about the dish. I will not waste any more time on this, but I do not think that this...

I have been to Shang Hai restaurant in Bristol a few times, each time has been consistent food wise. Understand that this is a family operated authentic chinese eatery. I ordered the delicious Peking duck dish, has some lomein noodles, rice, and vegetables. Everything was very tasty, full of flavour, and fresh tasting. Peking duck is one of my favorite dishes, and I wanted to try it out at Shang Hai. Food was great quality and the service as decent. Overall, this was a good place to eat and I will be back again for more Peking duck!

This is an amazing family-owned gem in Bristol's historic downtown area. We dined outdoors on the covered patio, right along State St. Some highlights of our meal include: the best hot and sour soup I have had anywhere; shatteringly crisp *homemade* spring rolls (the peppery beef one is especially delicious); locally sourced roast duck; pan-fried shrimp and water chestnuts; and a chow mei fun strewn with fluffy egg and vegetables. Everything was delicious, and we can't wait to return!
