Nice place, well-kept and clean, and the service was good. The servers were great with our kids, and the vibe all around was positive and relaxed. If you've ever had Georgia Coffee (popular coffee brand in the indo-pacific) or Kopiko coffee candies, the "Korean Coffee" they make and serve hits the spot, and when I took my first sip, all I could do is smile and remember sipping Georgia Coffee's while in Okinawa. I went for the Bibimbap, it tasted great, and all the ingredients were good. One thing that was a little bit of a bummer is that it didn't come with a raw egg cracked on top in a broiling hot stone bowl as previous variations of bibimbap I've had were served, but please don't let that stop you from trying it, it still hits the spot. The sushi and tempura were good, and the bento box was plenty for 1. The sushi line had room for 6 and the rolls were well made. Overall, between the food, the service, and the general feel of it, I'd 100% recommend trying it out. It's located next to Q'Doba and Painting with a Twist and shares a parking lot. They also have a small room for reservations that looks great for small business lunches, meetings, or small gatherings.

Update: I have ordered from Oppa several times since my first review. It's one of my new favorite places. Today was the very first time I dined in. The service was amazing! The food tasted even better due to presentation and not being taken out, and the atmosphere has a chill vibe that I love! The homemade dumplings were delicious, and the sushi bento box was amazing. You've seriously got to check this place out! Original review: Their sushi is amazing! I do think some of their menu items are priced just slightly too high, but it's competitive with every other sushi place in Grand Rapids. The first time I ever went, I accidentally ordered way too much, not knowing how big their rolls were, but none of it went to waste. As a matter of fact, I went back for lunch just days later. This is definitely going to be a regular spot for me!

Completely underwhelming. Starting with the decor: newer restaurant, they have some nice fun artwork on the walls, nice TV showing their stuff off, then they have stuff scotch taped to the wall, they have poorly painted half wall of chalkboard paint. The server was a nice young man, didn't really seem happy to be there or have a lot of experience, never saw him smile once. Finally the food, vegetarian options looked good, however the tofu appetizer was not great, salad was okay. Sushi rolls were nothing special, I have had better/less expensive rolls elsewhere. Had a hair on one of the pieces. Some of the pieces easily fell apart. The worst part was the tempura batter for the veggie roll tasted like fish, obviously using the same batter bowl for everything. I will not be returning any time soon

I was super excited to try OPPA for the first time! Unfortunately, I was quickly disappointed.

Customer Service was HORRIBLE: The gentleman that came to the table 1st barely greeted us and kind of just stood there awkwardly. He was unable to answer my question about the difference between a couple options. Next, a burly, husky, younger woman came to the table to get the order, but I still had the same question which she rudely gave a response to, but it was not relevant to my question. I just assumed a language barrier- which I figured out was not the case when I saw her laughing and chit-chatting with other customers. When she brought 2 waters in hard plastic cups, I requested 2 straws since none were provided. The server woman was rude, used short responses, and her body language spoke volumes. Needless to say she did not return with a straw, instead, she greeted others who came in after us and helped the group of 3 that walked in right before us, getting their orders to them. I even rose my hand a couple times and was ignored, she didn’t even look in my direction, the place is so small that I know she saw me, but continued to ignore me. She proceeded to walk past my guest and I several times, seating others and laughing and talking with them. I only ordered a vegetable and chicken tempura, which took so long to bring out (about 30 minutes). I watched as every person who came in after me got serviced, their requests met, and their food before I did. I waited patiently, but almost got up to leave, and should have, but then the food came, so I stayed. The gentleman from the first interaction brought out the food, at which time I asked again for straws for our drinks- he brought me 1, so I had to ask for 1 more. I had only ate 2 rolls out of 10 and the woman server came by and set the check on the table, didn’t say anything. I was wanting to also try the ice cream mochi but was unable to request it since I had been ignored the whole 30 minutes I was waiting on my food, then being given a check as my food arrived at the table. This experience ruined any future visits for me. I will not return, not even for take out, I’ll pay another sushi place even if I have to pay more.

While I do not jump to assumptions of racisms and biases, this whole interaction made it feel that way. My guest and I were the only people of color- I am a mixed - black, indian, and white female and my guest was a black male; EVERY other person was caucasian, and the differences in service were clearly present. This Raises questions as to why we were treated so differently.

While I ALWAYS make it a point to take care of servers and other service industry personnel by tipping VERY well- over 20%, I didn’t leave any tip due to this experience.. It was apparent by their actions (lack of service, rude and short responses, and the mistreatment as a paying customer) that my guest and I were not welcomed in their establishment.

I am deeply disappointed since the food was very good for my first time trying sushi. Unfortunately, it’ll be the last experience for me at OPPA! I would’ve ended up being a regular to try other things if it was not for this horrible customer service experience. I will not recommend OPPA to anyone, especially to my...

REPLY to OWNER: I understand that tips are split between all servers but, in my time there you only waited on one table while he waited on five if he is in training and not knowledgeable about the menu you should be training him.. going table to table with him to answer questions the customer may have. You say he doesn’t know the “service” but, I saw as he was very attentive to his tables while you as you say were in charge of other duties. I was not planning on returning as I had already mentioned. I don’t spread miss information I am leaving my review of your restaurant based of my experience which seems others have shared about as well. Best Wishes to you and your business good service will bring customers back more than good food.

I was very disappointed with the customer service provided by the owners daughter. She was not my server but, she is in charge of passing out and picking up checks. I observed as a very kind gentleman who was my server waited on me and all 4 tables around me while the owners daughter bossed him around to do this and that. I noticed she would rush to pick up the checks that had been paid for so I decided to pay in cash and handed my server his tip and told him it was for him. To which he responded with “thank you very much, but we share all of it” I understand it is each business decision how tips will be distributed but, I don’t think it’s fair for one person to do all the work and provide excellent service while the other does not do her part. I was upset by this as I tipped my server very well for his work and attentiveness but, as a first time customer I will not be back and do not recommend this place to any one due to the customer service provided by the...

Oppa is quite easily among the best Sushi restaurants currently in the greater Grand Rapids area. I have eaten at almost every Sushi place that Grand Rapids has to offer and I am proud to count Oppa as amongst my favorite. The chefs there are passionate and talented, the staff is kind and helpful. It is a place where I eagerly go when I want to treat myself to some delicious food. Their in store seating is small, quaint, speaking to the smalltime mom and pop nature of this restaurant. A mom and pop serving some of the best Sushi in Grand Rapids. As a resident of he Walker/Copersville area it is nice to have access to food of this quality without having to drive into the city. My only complaint is that accessing their menu through their website can be challenging. You have to download each page of their menu individually, and the pages can be formatted differently. If you don't have access to Microsoft Word or are on a mobile device, this can present a challenge. However, it is well worth it, and frankly for a shop this size their web setup is more than acceptable. I often get takeout when ordering from here, and once I have access to the menu the process is smooth and the food is delicious. I would highly recommend this place.

My two favorite items from their menu are their signature Oppa roll and their stuffed mushrooms (The mushrooms are under a different name, but it escapes me at the time of writing...
