Our family decided to stop here for dinner based on good reviews. How does this place have good reviews!? A major red flag was the sign as you go in that states Japanese cuisine is an acquired taste so don't ask for anything to be removed from your bill because you don't like the taste. I decided maybe too many people were trying to get out of paying for their food. Nope. The food really is so terrible that I can see why people would request items be removed from the bill. We didn't say anything about the food because I felt it was pointless having read the sign. I also had to abandon my husband as he paid the bill (he never complains as he doesn't feel comfortable saying anything) because our teenage son was outside throwing up. The only decent item we had was the fried jb sushi roll and it was definitely not top tier sushi. The crab angel appetizers were not good and tasted strange. We did eat them because there were five in an order and seven of us and we were hungry. The salads were from a bag and they had obviously been sitting in the open bowls in a refrigerator for a while as the lettuce was brown in spots and soggy. We hoped that the actual food would be better. It took approximately 45 minutes to receive our meals. The restaurant only had a few other customers while we there from around 6:00-7:30 on a Monday night, so they were far from busy. The server was very nice but would leave for a refill (we all only had one refill each) and not return for 10-15 minutes. We only had six drinks total as we didn't order one for our toddler. We asked for two drinks to be refilled one time and the other four to be refilled later on, so we were not constantly asking. We even had to request silverware a second time as we had salads and sushi but no way to eat them. My teenage son squashed a large cockroach for them while we waited on our food. The actual meal was even worse. My husband ordered duck. It was tough, dry, and rubbery and being a man of the woods said he thought it was pigeon instead of duck. He choked it down because of being hungry and knowing we would have to pay for it anyway. My daughter and I ordered hibachi steak and chicken. Literally the worst hibachi we've ever eaten. The steak was burned and the vegetables had to be frozen, bagged vegetables. The rice was somewhat edible but no one ate more than a couple of bites. Probably a good thing as the rice started to topple out of one of the bowls as they were bringing the food out, and one of our children saw them mash it back in the bowl with a bare hand. Unfortunately this wasn't mentioned until after we left. Our middle son ordered Ramen which is typically his favorite thing to eat. The spoon for his Ramen was wet and smelled like straight bleach, so he couldn't use it. He tried to eat the Ramen but only managed a little which he proceeded to 10 minutes later violently vomit in my vehicle as we were driving. Our two oldest sons ordered different variations of the curry. It smelled and tasted like handsoap. Disgusting. The oldest always eats everything and he couldn't choke it down. Our teenage son immediately went outside and proceeded throw up the small amount he had eaten. It had instantly made his stomach hurt as he started eating. No we aren't sick and no we don't have stomach issues after eating. It was the food. Thankfully our toddler only ate half of the outside of a crab angel, one bite of sushi, and one bite of chicken. I gave him a bite of steak that he promptly spit on the floor. He refused to eat anything after that. This is not typical behavior for him. He was so hungry and frustrated from waiting so long that he gave up and went to sleep. At least he didn't get sick as well. In this economy this was an expensive mistake costing us $162.48 which doesn't include removing the vomit from my vehicle or the second dinner we had to go purchase. They also add 20% gratuity for a "group" which was $25.31 on our bill. As the bill was paid they asked if we wanted to leave a tip. Um, the tip was already added. TLDR: The food is disgusting...
Read moreEDIT: apparently the owner thinks an hour plus wait for a sushi roll is okay if there’s two other tables and online orders coming in. And then Insult customers and say it’s because we expect “grocery store sushi” and “we don’t take shortcuts and that’s what people like you do not appreciate.” You should probably put as much energy into making sure you’re not sending out sushi that tastes like a dirty penny as you do responding to bad reviews that are well deserved. There were a total of four tables that left and came in while we were there. Only two that sat down around the same time as us. Yes we agreed bring it out as it comes. That doesn’t mean “heck yeah take 30+ minutes!!”. The plates were empty because it’s only eight pieces and the rest of the table tried it to make sure I wasn’t the only one who thought it tasted like a dirty penny. If I was lying about how the sushi tasted wouldn’t I try to get a refund in restaurant? I’ve been told the owner is rude but judging from the reply it looks like everyone was right. We didn’t want our order fixed because we had already been there over an hour and we didn’t feel like waiting another 30 minutes for a remake. Service was all around slow. We had a party of seven. It took about fifteen minutes after we ordered our drinks to get them. Two people ordered non-sushi dishes, which came out in a timely manner. The next entree didn’t come out until 30 minutes later, then the next one came out 10 minutes later, then the next one five minutes later. They said it was related to a party that was in the hibachi room, but it wasn’t a very large party and that still shouldn’t be an excuse for having that long of a wait time for food because that’s a normal occurrence in the restaurant business. There was only one other table in the restaurant other than us and that party. Then one of the rolls we ordered had tuna that had very much gone bad and made my boyfriend and my mom sick. Then the check took about ten minutes to get after we asked for it. Server was nice, but that was the only positive experience. Service was just way too slow for the lack of customers in the restaurant and wasn’t worth waiting that long for food that made...
Read moreYes, this is a 5 star review so let's just get the negatives out of the way up front. We arrived at 6:30, a party of 4. Although sushi is the 1st 3 pages of their menu, they did not have a Sushi order sheet to mark like a typical sushi bar would. We typically like to order 8 to 10 rolls and just all share "family style" for the variety. We had to ask for a scrap sheet of paper to write are sushi orders. One of our party ordered green curry. We also ordered to soups and 2 appetizers. This sounds like a lot of food but we did not eat all day. The order that the food came to the table was odd. About 10 minutes later the miso soups came. Then the curry came. About 30 minutes later our 2 appetizers, came followed immediately by our sushi on a large tray. We were never given plates to eat from so we had to ask for plates for our sushi. We ordered 6 rolls, but only 5 arrived and, yes, we were only charged for the 5.
So why 5 stars? 1) Because the food was absolutely amazing! 2)The décor inside is beautiful and so relaxing! It creates a very calming ambience. 3) The wait staff was so polite, friendly, smiling and helpful. And, yes, apologetic for the mistakes. 4) They had live music! And the singer was phenomenal! 5) The place was so clean! Hand sanitizer stations decorated to fit the ambience in several locations.
But let's get back to that food because after all that's why you go to a restaurant. Ever eat sushi and all the rolls start tasting the same? Not these! Each one had its own distinct flavor! The spider roll was stuffed with soft shell crab! They were generous with the avocado in the rolls. We tried some unique rolls that we have not seen in other sushi restaurants and these were fabulous. Oh, and the curry and appetizers? Out of this world yum!
So yes, 5 stars. After all, these are some awkward times with restaurants just opening backup, and the mistakes were likely due to new staff and new procedures. However, I do highly recommend they incorporate a sushi order form to go along with their sushi menu. Don't forget to tip the...
