First time at J. Liu. We were seated in the back room, next to the server's station; so I had about the worst view from my seat, watching servers key-in orders a foot behind my wife.
The food was really good: the lobster bisque was served hot and tasted good. Found only small bits of lobster though. Also I opted for the bowl portion instead of the cup, which I found (not surprisingly) to be too much bisque, since I planned to order an entree. I got the house burger, subbing the pretzel bun for the sesame seed brioche bun from the veggie burger. The burger was cooked correctly and had really good flavor with the bacon jam. The subbed bun was a bit soggy though, which probably would have been fine if I'd stuck to the heavier pretzel bun.
The least enjoyable part of our experience -- and the main driver for the 2 star rating -- were issues with our drinks: When we were seated we were given lists for wine and bottled beer, but not for drafts. This lead me to believe they may not have draft beer. Only after our server asked us for our drink order, did I ask if they served drafts. How can I order something, indeed something I want, if you don't tell me what you have? She didn't have a paper menu, but read off about a half dozen craft beers. This is a big pet peeve of mine at restaurants - selling craft beer at craft beer prices without providing a menu for me to examine. I asked for a sample of one, which I don't normally do, but since I couldn't be sure what they were from a single reading or look them up while she stood there, I wasn't about to order something I didn't like for my only drink of the night. Again a paper menu would have prevented the need for this. The sample I was given was a sweet, non-hoppy stout. I asked for a full pint and was brought a hoppy IPA (I think it was the Fat Heads JuJu). I told the server of the error, but opted to keep it, not wanting to throw out good beer.
The bigger issue was with my wife's stout on nitro. Unfortunately, the bartender working Saturday night did not know how to pour a nitro. My wife's beer was served half head and when it settled, the glass was only half full. Whoever poured it did not wait for it to settle and finish filling the glass. This was a bad screwup by the bar, but we let it go until our server asked my wife if she wanted another... No! She'd like the second half of her first one... I then told our server about the problem and she reacted surprised and defensive, mentioning a lame excuse about the tap lines being new or different. This prompted me to be more direct; I told her the drink was poured incorrectly and she should check with the bartender. Our meals had not even been served, but from that point on in the evening the server ignored both of our drinks and never followed up or offered to correct anything. So my wife got half a beer at full price. More importantly, an issue we raised was ignored. That kind of attitude will not be getting us back to J. Liu anytime soon. Not when there are so many good options in Dublin...
Read moreWife and I went here after the OSU/PSU game last evening.
Beer was overpriced and a bit lacking. Mine was listed as a 19.2oz Lagunitas, yet I watched the waiter pour a 12oz can for me...yet charge $7.50 for it!
Food was decent. I had the Pad Thai, as I was in the mood for it. Good, not great. Wife's has the Jason's spicy chicken - again, good but not great. Pricing was a little high for what you got.
Here is where we have a problem. Right after we got our drinks and the waiter took our order, the power began flashing out for 1-4 seconds at a time. It was raining out but not windy, so I'm not sure what was the issue. On the 8th time it flashed out (flashed for several minutes), it finally went out for good.
A few minutes later, the waiter came by and said our food was done and offered us to take it to go. Mind you we had not finished our beer and paid to sit in a restaurant, not have takeout. I declined that offer, turned my cell phone light on (as I guess they don't have candles here) and we ate by cell light.
Come bill time, it took FOREVER as they tried to figure out how to charge us manually. Mind you, the place was dead and they had plenty of time to figure it out. One of the only customers near us was ticked, as they tried to leave when the power first went out then were recommend to stay as the power came back on. They had two glasses of what sounded like very overpriced wine and were ticked they didn't get a discount as they couldn't get reservations anywhere else since they stayed there per the hosts recommendation. I'm not saying the customer was totally right, but the manager didn't seem to care at all.
As for our bill, it finally arrived and of course at full price. Full price to eat in the dark. Had the pricing been a bit better and we had light, I would have given it 4 stars. 3 stars had it just stay lit. 2 stars since we had no light and the place did nothing to help with that (they didn't even offer to seat us somewhere with...
Read moreIf I could give this place NO stars, I would! My husband and I usually frequent the J Liu in Worthington but was in the area a couple of days ago and thought Dublin’s location would be worth the try, oh how wrong we were! When my husband and I were seated we requested a high chair for our one year old, one for which we would wait a long time. While placing drink orders, we realized we did not have any silverware which I let my server Max know. When he came back with our silverware and drinks, I noticed my husband’s fork had something brown caked on the back, to which we requested plastic ware. We were then rushed to place an order, and when we did, ended up having to wait 30 minutes for our food to arrive, that is when I reminded my server I was in need of a high chair, Max attempted to argue about whether or not I’d asked for one, and after some back and forth and a very unwarranted eye roll, he left to attain a high chair, only to return with the messiest thing I’ve ever been given! I was given attitude for the request of another one and the service there after was dry. The atmosphere was something to talk about, let me just say! You had servers walking around bad mouthing customers, each other, and even the manager who happened to be the loud lady spewing blasphemy and profanities, currently taking shots at the bar in front of I and other customers. I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears! Once our food did arrive, my husband, who ordered the miso salmon had lukewarm salmon. I myself ordered the Classic salad, and after letting Max know of my peanut allergy, would still be served with the candied pecans in my salad. I asked him if I could have it remade, and was given attitude! That was the last straw, between the bad service and everything else, I was not about to continue to stay, my husband and I walked out right then and there! I will definitely NOT be coming back, and will be sticking to...
