We stopped by Larry's after biking around and developing a hankering for ice cream. There's something comically charming about an ice cream shop in a basement, as well as it being called "Larry's," and indeed the workers inside charmed us with lots of affectionate names: "love, doll, sweetheart." They also said, "We're not supposed to give more than one taste" when I of course asked for a second taste and surely would have asked for a third... so maybe they have a point in their rule. Still, this was annoying. I wanted to taste a few options and get the one I liked best.
Of course, no one is going to these places for the pet names or miniature tasting spoons. The ice cream is good! I got "decadence," which is a deep, dark chocolately blissfulness. My fiancé got the cinnamon cookie something, which as a cinnamon lover both thrilled and disappointed me. It just didn't have enough kick, or it had too many flavors going on at once, or the flavors it had didn't blend... hard to put the ole finger on it.
The key point here is that we each got a kiddie cone, but the total still came out to $10. What a racket. Of course, the ice cream was good, the cone tasted like almond, and it hit the spot.
Would I go back? If I needed ice cream and was in the area? Sure. Would I head specifically over to Larry's from another part of...

Read moreI used to think very highly of this establishment, until comparing it to local competition.
The good:
Very easy to get to using public transit. Metro red line at Dupont; make a left on Connecticut and walk about one block and it’s on the right, below ground level.
Wide variety of flavors that tend to stay the same throughout the year.
Generally very little to no wait time in line as he proprietor sternly asks customers what they want.
The bad:
Once a flavor is out in the case it’s out for the day. So on very hot days popular flavors become unavailable quickly.
Ice cream, while good quality, lacks sufficient milk fat to give it the premium creamy texture and flavor. For the price I expect it. The ingredients are also subpar to competition, as the flavor reveals.
Pricing is on the higher side for what you really get.
I personally find Jeni’s off 14th St NW, and Pop’s Old Fashioned off King St in Old Town Alexandria superior. Both places serve premium ice cream with that buttery, creamy texture and taste that’s expected of higher...
