Walking into Thai Chef Street Food feels like stepping into a bustling corner of Bangkok right in the heart of Dupont Circle. From the moment we arrived, the place was alive with energy—packed tables, the sound of sizzling woks, and the constant flow of takeout orders whisking by. Despite the rush, the staff was welcoming, and we quickly found ourselves seated, taking in the colorful, vibrant atmosphere. I decided to go for the green curry after reading rave reviews, and it did not disappoint. The curry had the perfect balance of spice and creaminess, warming me from the inside out. It’s one of those dishes you savor with every bite, and honestly, I wasn’t surprised when I saw people around me ordering it as well—it’s a definite crowd-pleaser. The portions were generous too, leaving me full and satisfied without feeling overly stuffed. The cocktails here are an experience of their own. Not only are they crafted with care, but they also come out looking like little pieces of art. I couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures before taking a sip! The flavors were bold and well-paired with the meal, adding to the overall experience. If you're a fan of street food, this is the spot for you. The menu is packed with Bangkok-style street eats, perfect for anyone wanting an authentic taste of Thailand. They even have plenty of gluten-free and vegan options, so there’s something for everyone. Yes, it gets noisy, and the tables are close together, making it hard to hear at times. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. It feels like a lively street market where the noise just adds to the authenticity. And even though the place was packed, the wait for food was totally reasonable. It’s clear they’ve mastered the balance between quick service and quality food. After such a satisfying meal, I’m already planning my next visit. And for those nights when I want to keep the flavors flowing at home, I’ll be hitting up Pull Up DC to snag some of their fresh flowers to wind down with. If you're in Dupont Circle, Thai Chef Street Food is a must-visit—just be sure to bring...
Read moreThe food here was flavorful and the meat in all dishes was really tender; not to mention, the decor is really colorful and overall atmosphere is nice.
I docked the stars off for two reasons; first, our party of 6 had to wait for about 15 minutes for a table to be put together because there weren’t 6 people tables ready, even though there were plenty 2 and 4 person ones that could be combined.
More importantly, the duck curry and other curry dishes were just too sweet for my taste; I’m sure it’s part of the flavors and cuisine, but the whole dish was just overwhelmingly and sickeningly too coconut and there were no other flavors present. The duck was tender but the sweetness of the curry made me enjoy it less than I thought I would’ve. I won’t be having something coconut flavored for at least a year after that meal; if I’m being honest, the sweet curry ruined the meal for me.
However, the fried rice was good. I recommend not getting the curry dishes if you don’t enjoy sweet coconut curry. Also, parties of 5 or more are charged mandatory 20% tip; our family thought that wasn’t very reasonable considering the wait we had for the barely filled restaurant.
The service was helpful aside from the incident when we came in and the food definitely had a lot of flavor, regardless of whether or not it was good, and components; the food interests you and fills you up but doesn’t exceed expectations. Nice restaurant, pretty decorations, but the food was expensive for the portion size and was completely underwhelming. It was really just another meal. The food may have satisfied our hunger, but we definitely regret coming here and I’m not looking forward to my next encounter with...
Read moreWhat a great restaurant! We walked in and were immediately greeted by their hostess and wonderful workers. They were very charming and super nice. Their interior consisted of neat collections of small items and cool lights. It felt quite cozy to eat there.
We ordered from their lunch specials as we ate there around 1 o'clock. I got the Spicy Basil Fried Rice with chicken/pork and also ordered the Thai Ice Tea. They were really flexible with my Ice Tea - I was hesitant of ordering the tea because of my dairy allergy. But they worked with my allergy and replaced the milk with lemonade. Again, super nice!
The tea was a little too sweet for me but it was still really delicious. Next time I would definitely ask them to tone down on the sugar level.
I love their lunch specials! It comes with the entree, a spring roll, and soup. The soup came first and it was mixed with chicken and mushrooms. All together it tasted sour and spicy which was really good. Then our entrees came out and again, I got the Spicy Basil Fried Rice with chicken/pork. It also came with the spring roll on the side. Needless to say, it was all yummy. The meat wasn't dry at all and the portions were huge. It was pretty spicy so next time I come, I'll tell them to lower the spice level.
After our food, we ordered their deserts. I got the raspberry slush. It was nice and cold. I could chew on the small icicles in it which I really like. It was great for the hot summer day after our meal.
I got to know the owner who was extremely friendly. She, in addition to our waitress, constantly checked on us to make sure we were doing ok.
It was a great experience and I'll definitely be back. Highly...
