Made a rez for two through Open Table with instructions that we were celebrating birthday milestone for my wife, asking for a little extra attention and effort for our meal. When we arrived the teen hostess asked who was having the birthday and it was then I knew the celebration was going down hill. No acknowledgement by our waiter who wanted to tell us all about how much he knew about the menu and a wine list, which we never received. Brought out our drinks and my dirty martini was not on the rocks and was missing the 2nd olive I requested. Wedge salad was not cored, had brown center and was missing the "extra blue cheese" dressing was not in attendance and for that matter, neither was our waiter. He was busy attending to the table of 6 next to us whose desires were more lavish than ours, hence demanded more attention, conversation and conviviality. Our entrees were presented by kitchen staff, not our waiter, our baked potatoes were cool on top and steaks luke warm. For added measure, my wifes "rare" filet was more done than my medium rare Delmonico. I caught our waiter's attention to ask for another filet done as requested and thankfully he brought a replacement steak quickly with profuse apologies. The aforementioned table of 6 had two diners that spoke in a manner more suitable for the entire venue than just their table. It got so bad my wife and I both had a hard time conversing just 2-3 feet away from each other. In every other instance where I made a specific request for special care and attention with restaurants of better or equal reputation than Morrie's, we were treated with the attention not only befitting the occasion, but also the restaurant's reputation. Surprisingly, my wife made a terse comment to our waiter who didn't know of her birthday as it was not communicated to him from reservations...and so, what was to be a low keyed celebration became a trying dining experience one could only occasionally expect from a Longhorn or Texas Roadhouse. We were followed out by a manager (?) who never ID'd herself and wanted to know what happened. We told her in less detail than I'm doing here and she asked if she could "call us tomorrow?" Told her not to bother, the impression was already made, we just wanted to get out of the rain. Her parting shot was wishing us "rainbows" after the storm. Hell will freeze over before we shadow...
Read moreStarting out your experience here, the decor and lighting in the restaurant is perfect. Whether you are there for a business dinner, date or family and friends get together it's themed and feels perfect. With a seperate room for larger gatherings, intimate two seater tables and medium sized group seating it seems you will be good no matter what you come with (It also seems like they have a bit of bar seating on the other side).
The staff is very friendly to round out your experience before your food. They love to give suggestions on the menu and all seem well acquainted with the food and beverages. Our waiter Will was very friendly and was happy to accommodate our group in many ways.
But you are coming here for two things most likely. The wine, and the food. Their sommelier stocked and managed wine room has options for any occasion and food pairing. Just ask and you will be recommended to countless choices by people who really know their wine. The food is also perfectly picked and menu'd out. While yes you are in a upper class restaurant, you will find some options around the $20-30 range as well as the prime cuts of meat you see up in the $70. From vegetarian, fish, poultry and the stars of the menu beef cuts I can't imagine anyone walking away not able to find their desired dish. Look up online at their website to see their great menu choices.
I had gone for the "Chocolate Chipotle Chili" and then their "Duroc Bone In Pork Chop". The chili was great, a nice subtle taste of sweet/bitter dark chocolate with a non-overpowering kick from the chipotle spiciness. Perfect serving portion for a starting dish if you want to go a non-salad route. The pork dish I had was great as well. Honestly a bit overcooked, but the sauces I had on it were a nice balance to that slight disappointment (as well as the great rice and carrot sides served with it). I feel like I need to give the pork chop another chance on a future visit, but there is so much more on that menu I want to try.
The skinny of it is, if you want a nice upscale atmosphere for a night out dinner. You won't leave here...
Read moreMorrie's gets 5 stars across the board. This is what a restaurant should be. The food was amazing, but I'll get to that in a minute. The menu was filled with locally sourced dishes supporting South Dakota businesses. From locally raised grass fed and finished beef to a gorgeous plate specifically for the 100 layer lasagna made by Sioux Falls artist Sonja Gloria Pottery, Morrie's is the epitome of a farm to table experience. We started with oysters, which were cooked to absolute perfection, and my drink of choice was an espresso Martini. The Martini was just the right blend of coffee and alcohol, neither flavor overwhelming the other. Then our steaks arrived, and we experienced the most delicious steak I've ever eaten. I ordered the ribeye with asparagus, and my son had the bacon wrapped filet mignon with carrots. Though it was too much food, I didn't realize the shareable side was so large, we also had Lobster mashed potatoes! We were both too full from our steaks to eat the mashed potatoes, but nibbles were an explosion of flavor, and the Lobster was perfection. Get them. Even if you just take them home. Get them. Both steaks were cooked exactly as ordered, medium rare, and were tender, juicy, and full of mouth-watering flavor! The locally sourced vegetables were fresh and delicious. The service was on point. Lori was our server and was attentive but not overbearing, showing up at exactly the right times for refills or the next course. Juggling the right balance of being available, friendly, and attentive while also giving us the space to enjoy our meal can be challenging, but Lori was masterful. There is not a single thing I would change about our dining experience at Morrie's and I can unequivocally recommend them as the best meal I've had in Sioux Falls and one of the top five of all dining...
