Tucked into the bustling West Loop, The Great American Bagel is a rare find ā the kind of place that turns a casual breakfast run into a crave-worthy ritual. From the moment you walk in, youāre greeted with the comforting aroma of freshly baked bagels and a team that treats you like a regular, even if itās your first visit.
Letās talk bagels: theyāre legit. Boiled and baked to perfection, with that ideal balance of crisp exterior and chewy center, these are not your average corner-store bagels. Each flavor ā from classic sesame to bold jalapeƱo cheddar ā is crafted with care. The everything bagel is a personal favorite: generously seasoned, not too salty, and just the right amount of crunch.
But what really sets this place apart? The sandwiches. Whether youāre grabbing a classic egg and cheese or diving into a piled-high turkey avocado on an asiago bagel, every bite is layered with fresh ingredients and serious flavor. The portions are generous, the options are endless, and everything is customizable to a fault.
Service is fast, friendly, and efficient ā even during the morning rush. Prices are fair for the quality and size, and the consistency keeps locals and newcomers coming back.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreI finally stopped by The Great American Bagel after passing it so many times on my morning walks with my pupāand Iām so glad I did!
It was a sunny Saturday and the place looked inviting, so I wandered in to see what all the bagel buzz was about. First impressions? The shop is super clean, which is always a plus in my book. Most of the staff were warm and welcoming, though I have to say the cashier felt a little cold. Maybe she was having an off dayāhey, we all do. It didnāt ruin the experience, just felt a little āmehā compared to the rest of the team.
Now, letās talk about that lox cream cheese and scallion cream cheeseāTO. DIE. FOR. Creamy, flavorful, and just the right amount of extra. I could honestly eat those by the spoonful (donāt worry, I didnāt... yet). Pair them with one of their freshly baked bagels, and you're in breakfast heaven. Theyāve got a great variety tooāplain, everything, asiago, cinnamon raisināyou name it.
Prices are fair for what you get. Not the cheapest bagels in town, but definitely worth it for the quality and flavor. Iāll be backānext time with my dog waiting outside and a toasted...

Before leaving townā¦. decided Iād walk over to their location since it was just a few blocks away from where I was staying.
This is where the loss of two stars came about! Customer service was not the best.
There were two young ladies working that morning. The one who waited on me (tall, slim, brunette, short hair) was not the most pleasant! She just seemed short and unenthusiastic about serving me.
I only had one request, because I was goin to be taking them back homeā¦. the bagels wanted were the fresh ones from the front of the trays.
The ones at the back were darker which usually means theyāre the day olds. While she did begrudgingly accommodate my request, it was clear by her demeanor.. I was being extraš¤āļø
