We have had Wonder Chop on our list to try and since it’s our New Year’s Day tradition to eat Chinese food, today was the perfect day to give it a go. I was very pleased with the quality of the food as well as the overall execution of the dishes. Here is what we ordered, along with some hopefully helpful notes: Shumai - Basic steamed shrimp shumai…nothing fancy here, difficult to mess up…would have liked a dipping sauce included. We made our own with a mix of soy sauce, hot mustard and sriracha. Crab Rangoons - Nice and crispy without the greasiness…I also like my rangoons without chunks of onions and these hit the spot with a creamy crabby filling. Hot & Sour Soup - This was the only item where I think they fell short…wasn’t spicy or sour…tasted a bit bland, could have been just a bad batch? Mongolian Beef - No stringy, chewy cheap meat here…just tender pieces of beef in a perfect sauce with crispy veggies. General Tso’s Chicken - As it should be, this was the star of the show. Good solid pieces of chicken that somehow taste HEALTHY without over-breading…beautifully cooked meat and the sauce is on point. Roast Pork Fried Rice - Pork is usually my go-to for fried rice. There were pieces that were a bit dry but there is a nice proportion of meat to rice where you feel you’re getting your money’s worth. Broccoli with Garlic Sauce - Perfectly cooked broccoli. Many places overcook their veggies but Wonder Chop does a great job keeping the al dente crunch. Bean Curd Szechuan Style - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ordered this at other Chinese restaurants and I’m generally disappointed but Wonder Chop makes this just the way I like it with firm tofu, peas and a perfectly spicy sauce. We ordered all this food for take-out and the food was delicious. I don’t know if they usually include the hot mustard packets so you may want to specifically ask for it if hot mustard is a must for you.
Finally, the woman who packaged the food was so sweet, friendly, and warm. Give Wonder Chop a try the next time you’re...

In all my years of dining at Chinese restaurants, I never, ever partook of Chinese cuisine as spectacular as that at Wonder Chop. My dining partner also felt the same. It's just astonishing.
I had the orange chicken which was far and away the best I ever ate. The chicken was juicy, tender and gloriously breaded, but the standout feature was the orange glaze itself.
Unlike typical dull orange glaze found in a lot of Chinese restaurants, the glaze at Wonder Chop is rich, thick and bursting with the heady flavor of fresh orange that really sets the bar for a superlative dining experience. The accompanying wonderfully prepared fried rice is a perfect balance to complete the meal.
My dining partner had a surf and turf-style dinner consisting of perfectly seasoned, tender beef and superior scallops that practically melted in the mouth. Another knock out dish!
For an appetizer, we had gyoza dumplings which were flavor-filled and delectable. Also, don't forget to try the addictive hot and sour soup! Highly recommended!
In addition, Wonder Chop prepares marvelous sushi that is also an ideal dining selection.
When you stop by, see if Mary is there. She's the owner's Mom and is a delightful, genuine, lovely woman who truly appreciates her customers and desires their sincere happiness.
In fact, when we were there, I was near and facing the window, and while she was speaking with us, so many people outside waved to her as they walked by. Mary has become an icon.
Wonder Chop is the finest Chinese restaurant in Chicago! By all...
Read moreWent here going by the reviews I saw online but won’t be back that’s for sure. AC was broken and only had a small fan for the entire restaurant. We went in and there was no host so we went to order at the front. We weren’t asked if we were going to dine in or take out. Either way we ordered and went to find a table. The wait time was 40 min which seemed long considering that it wasn’t busy. After waiting a solid 40+ min the person brought our food to the table in bags so I figured she assumed we were doing take out. We didn’t say anything and began eating when the manager (owner maybe) came over about 5 min later. She looked upset and all she said was “we don’t do business like that, now we have to clean all the bags and containers”. Confused, I just explained that no one asked if we would be dining in which was our intent. She looked surprised and walked off, no apology or anything. We ate, the rest of our bland tasting meal and carried off the trash leaving only...
