A mixed bag for a review that’s for sure. This is the only Teriyaki place actually in town so not a lot of options. I’m thinking that if a well run alternative restaurant were to open it would give this restaurant serious competition. Having said this I have a bit of a longitudinal review here. I have family members living near by and I have eaten here a few times over several years confined only to the Teriyaki menu. They do also advertise an Asian Fusion menu. But I didn’t want a burger and was in a hurry for a grandchild’s school performance so I stopped here. My previous experience wasn’t the greatest but thought I would try again. As soon as I walked in the Owner ? Greeted me with a friendly smile and welcomed me. But the air was oily stale and the stainless steel front on the Pepsi dispenser ice loading bin was smeared with oily hand prints. The traditional menu pictures of the offerings were fading away and somewhat difficult to discern. So I the entire back area was large enough but just seemed cluttered and disorganized. Hard to read with the flickering fluorescent lights. There seemed to be a general film over everything. I ordered your basic Chicken Teriyaki dinner. He directed me to a stack of cups to get my water. There was a a free water dispenser with lemon wedge in it but my gut told me not to trust the container. I did get ice and cold water from the Pepsi dispenser. The table was greasy and needed refinishing. I don’t think that In the last 10 years or so I’ve been in here that there has ever been any decorative or cleaning changes. I took some pictures of the dirty table, floors that just needed a good scrubbing, bases of wood dividers that needed scrubbing or painting. I mean it was extensive. Maybe I was just tired and should give it a break but you shouldn’t see the dirty pathway coming from the back area to the dining area. I have a picture to zoom in on that as well. When he brought out my plate he had my napkin curled up in his hand. I was thinking in this post COVD era do I really want to be wiping my face with a napkin he had crumpled up in his hand. Now. The plate of food itself was fresh and hot. And unlike some places the chicken moist and tender. The rice was fresh as was the salad so that was all good. If you’ve been to enough Teriyaki places you know that there is a familiarity with the sauce. This sauce use to be the same but within the last few years ? They changed it and my own preference doesn’t like the current version. They also are using shredded cabbage as salad instead of lettuce now which tastes differently. The dressing was milky translucent and basically flavorless. The serving size was large. It actually appears that there no longer are wait staff to assist and that the owner is managing the floor at all times. This is just my assumption but could be telltale. Another point here is that they actually have pretty decent ratings. Maybe not much done in anymore? Anyway after being a customer over several years and seeing the hygiene changes and subtle flavor/menu changes I just don’t think that I will ever be back again…. Needs a good...
Read moreI was skeptical when I went in to Joy Teriyaki tonight. I had tried their chicken teriyaki at a different location and had been underwhelmed. But the shrimp fried rice and I had tonight was fantastic. The rice itself with seasoned perfectly and tasted good with the sauces at the table, and the side salad was tasty.
My two minor quibbles: 1) it is a bit expensive - $9 for my meal - replace that looks like fast food. 2) two of my shrimp had the black intestinal tract still in the tail, so I cut those pieces off and didn't eat them. For that price, the shrimp should be "de-veined." Still, it was delicious and I was satisfied and I would happily eat it again.
The employee I interacted with, a woman, was friendly and helped me decide...
Read moreWe were pretty disappointed with the food we got. We ordered the lunch special which included chicken teriyaki and 3 gyoza. We didn't realize it only came with one tiny ball of rice. Also when we ordered, we were asked if we would like any sauce as they don't have any self serve. We asked for teriyaki and hot sauce. I thought they would give us extra sauce in little cups so we could add our own amount. The hot sauce was a small pile on the plate hidden by the rice and we didn't get any extra teriyaki. The chicken was very dry and chewy, it reminded us of chicken jerky (and the plate came with only 10 pieces). The rice and gyoza were quite good. It was not worth what we paid. We definitely won't be...
