Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place. Let's start with the positives - the place looks really nice, and the first starter, shredded beef, was good (although the sauce was a bit salty, which might be intentional). The craft beer served was also fine.
However, the second starter, the french fries with garlic butter (an uncommon mix, which is why we ordered them), was awful. They were extremely greasy, the frying grease seemed stale, and they weren't salty enough. The main dish, pork ribs, was okay, but not particularly special in my opinion. They could benefit from more braising time since the meat was hard to remove from the bone, although the taste was good. The fried rice was also okay but lacked seasoning, especially salt.
The main reason why I've decided to write this negative review is the poor service quality. The waiter who served us nearly rushed through our order, and we had to call him back to complete it. He also took our menus without asking, which was peculiar since we were the only ones from whom menus were taken. Each dish arrived at different times, and at the end, the waiter ignored us when we wanted to pay, so we had to chase him down.
Overall, it was the worst dining experience I've had in Vietnam so far. I would recommend trying any of the dozens of pho or bun serving places around instead. However, if I ever find myself in Hanoi for the second time, I would check for the newest reviews. If they are mostly positive, I would consider giving this place a second chance. I just hope that maybe the crew had a bad day and we were...
Read moreThey are famous for serving the most award winning Vietnamese rice liquor on earth in various flavors (SonTinh). I tasted the apricot flavored SonTinh and don't get it all all why this brand got internationally awarded. Maybe the 12/8 years aged versions are more convincing. The northern Vietnamese tapas/dishes on the menu, and used ingredients are of very good quality. They do also offer some wild stuff like snake, and grasshoppers. Besides mountain pork, sun dried deer, seafood, catfish summer rolls with dill & wasabi, fried sweet potatoes, salads etc. Herbs and greens are of top quality. Unfortunately it is impossible to test all the tempting choices on the menu in one visit. There is a spacious room for groups in the second floor. Beware that many classics on the menu are partly deep fried. My today’s favorite was a delicious broth with green leaves, a touch of crab meat, and marinated baby eggplants. Nice atmosphere, solid interior, good service, clean. Price per person for a full meal (2-5 combos) ~ 120K-500K Dong. Michelin...
Read moreWe found this restaurant in the Michelin Guide, described as a "tavern". Nice old building, and nicely done inside. It does describe on the menu, that it is a place to come and "get drunk" and it seemed like the group next to us had taken that instruction. They were playing music on their phones and were extremely loud. Not the place to come if you want a quieter dinner.
We ordered a selection of food. It was OK, but not brilliant. None of it was particularly highly flavoured, for example, we struggled to detect any hint of Sichuan Pepper on the ribs.
Not our best meal in Hanoi and we won't be visiting again.
We chose:
Cá Sụn Sịn Nướng Muối Ớt: "Sụn Sịn" Fish grilled w/Chili & Salt
Dẻ Sườn Nướng Mắc Khén: Spare Ribs grilled w/Sichuan Pepper
Free-range Duck in a Son Tinh Plum Liquor Sauce
Sauteed Chayote Stalks & Leaves
