RURAL TONKIN (Banh Mi Nhé, Bun Cha, Spring Rolls) — Restaurant in Hà Nội

This is such a gem of a restaurant tucked upstairs with a lovely street view. The owner, Inh, is such a sweet and hardworking lady (she runs the restaurant on her own) and the food is fantastic! This review is a few months late, but we still remember the wonderful meals we had here while in Hanoi. The menu offers a variety of Vietnamese specialities (Banh Mi, Bun Cha, sizzle platters). While it was all very good, our favorite was the Banh Mi and Bun Cha. We also enjoyed having some nice, genuine conversations with Inh on running a restaurant, life in Hanoi, Vietnamese cultural aspects (ancestor worship, familial roles in people’s lives, aspirations of young people in the country with school or jobs, etc). We tried a lot of different Banh Mi places so far but unfortunately it was not to our taste here. The bread is crispy like baguette bread and it seems like everything is spicy from the start. They ask you if you would like it spicy but it seems like extra chili or spicy sauce is meant with it, otherwise the standard is already spicy. As someone who is not able to eat spicy I would find it helpful to include this information on to the menu so one can be aware of it. They were so kind to remake it for me but it still had spicy traces.

This was MY FAVORITE restaurant in Ha Noi! It’s a tiny hole in the wall with a concrete staircase leading upstairs to the restaurant that has a few small tables and a window overlooking the bustling street. Clean and intimate. Ahn is the woman who does literally everything here from serving to cooking to cleaning. Everything here is fresh and made to order, so it does take a while but is 100% worth the wait!
