4.5/5 Review!!!!
I saw really mixed reviews before visiting here. Some people saying this is as close to a curry house as you will find back home (UK) and others saying that the wait and service will make this a terrible experience, so I was apprehensive about coming but I am very glad I did.
Came here at 8pm on a Saturday night. So I expected a small wait for a table and then a pretty long wait for my food but I was fully prepared for that. It wasn’t the case, we were seated straight away and it was relatively quiet when we arrived. Within 30 minutes though there wasn’t a table left. Good timing!! They took our order within 5 minutes. I was pleased with this start.
Draft beer in an Indian, with ice cold glasses, oh how I have missed this simple but extremely enjoyable pleasure. Not a bad price at 45k dong too.
Poppadoms and chutney were good and came within 5 minutes of ordering them. Mint sauce, onions, mango chutney and a tamarind sauce. Nice and fried. Not roasted like most restaurants in the states serve you.
Here comes the only disappointment of the night and I have said this in other reviews, I like my vindaloo, dark in colour, bitter even in taste and though this certainly delivered on the spice factor, probably the hottest Vindaloo I have had in South East Asia so far, in terms of taste, it under udelivered. It was a coconuty sort of taste, tomatoey, and as you can see from the light colour didn’t have the vindaloo qualities that I was hoping for and am used to, for anyone that eats vindaloo or hot curries in the UK, you will know what I mean, which was a shame because everything else, including the rice and naan delivered. 4/5 because the quality of the food was good and portion sizes, great too but you’re going to an Indian for the main event and unfortunately didn’t quite hit my high standards.
Price was more than fair, service was superb and they take cards which is a bonus.
Definitely check this out when in town, it really is great and unless you’re a curry obsessed critical freak like me, you will not be disappointed at all. I was...
Read moreReally, I want to give a 4.5. The staff is really great. They are really friendly and let you take your time. They are very helpful and offered to bring extra I've because they could tell we were so hot.
They brought out several side dishes... chutney some sauces and onions. They were really good. The price was really good too. We ordered Aloo Tikki, which I really liked. You get three large portions... and a sauce. They were really good. We also ordered Aloo Gobi Mattar, which I thought was really good too. My wife was a little less impressed but again for the price was good.
The Navrathana looked small but was really filling. It was something I hadn't tried before so I don't know how to compare it. My only disappointment was the Onion Naan. Normally, Naan is fairly easy to tear, and while sturdy enough to take a serving of curry, it's also a bit tender. This Naan was really hard to tear. I'm not sure if that's because it's onion or something else. If anything, maybe undercooked? I'm not certain and don't know how to judge it properly. It might be due to the onion.
My only disappointment with the atmosphere is the giant mirror on one of the walls. Other than that I loved the other wall with pictures and the ceiling lanterns.
We were pleasantly surprised with the complimentary rice pudding, which was delicious.
We overestimated our ability to consume food and we didn't finish our food. Not because it was bad but because we were that full.
Thanks again,...
Read moreBaba's Kitchen in Hoi An is a gem for those craving authentic Indian cuisine. This fairly large, air-conditioned restaurant offers comfortable seating on both the ground floor and upstairs. However, the upstairs area is typically reserved for large groups organized by travel agencies.
After a six-day journey across Vietnam, we were thrilled to find Baba's Kitchen, especially for our younger one who was longing for familiar Indian flavors. We ordered butter naan, butter chicken, and fried rice. To our pleasant surprise, we were served still water without even asking, a rare courtesy in Vietnamese restaurants where you usually have to pay for water.
Walking in from the hot, humid climate into the cool, ambient environment of Baba's Kitchen was refreshing. The food quality matched the atmosphere, making the experience truly enjoyable. The butter chicken was boneless and well-prepared, the fried rice reminiscent of what we enjoy back in India, and the naan a delightful break from the pho and noodle soups we had been eating.
Baba's Kitchen also offers a good selection of nonalcoholic drinks and beer. One standout was the mango pickle, which tasted just like our grandmother's homemade version, evoking fond memories of India.
Overall, Baba's Kitchen is worth every penny. It's not overly expensive, and the quality of food and service makes it a must-visit for anyone seeking Indian...
