You cannot come to Salzburg and not go to this Theatre. It is full of history. The Marionetteers (if that's what you call the people who work the Marionettes or puppets) are highly skilled and innovative, squashed together above the tiny stage working the puppets with skill and dexterity and in amazing movement. We were so fortunate to see a version of The Sound of Music with original music and it was so good that we went back the next night and saw the Magic Flute with music written by Mozart. It cost 35 Euros each to see the show but it is more than worth it you come out smiling broadly and marveling at the music and the the way the puppeteers go about their craft!! Not much in the way of munchies but there are plenty of restaurants around in the area. Lovely comfortable old fashioned Theatre seating. You get a good view from anywhere but it's better to pay more money and get closer to the front so you can see the detail in the marionettes and appreciate the skill with which they are worked. Don't miss it!!...
Read moreUnexpectedly good experience. We watched Zauberflöte short performance (1 hour) with teenagers 12 and 15 years and with a friend who is a professional violinist. I watched several performances of this opera including one in Metropolitan Opera in New York. So, to say the truth, I did not expect a lot. But it was amazing that this performance made all of us happy. Kids were enchanted by very intricate puppet work that was indeed on a level that let you actually forget at some moment that they are puppets. The interpretation was very close to the classic original and very funny. Last but not least, the music and singing part were really good and you listen the very high quality musical version of the opera in good recorded quality. Overall amazing experience both visually and musically. Also,...
Read moreAbsolute waste of money (30€ per person), especially for those who can't understand German.
The English explanations that they provide along with the show are not subtitles but mere guide to tell you what's happening. It ruins the experience atleast into half.
There was very little puppetry involved. It was more of a story telling. That too a very simple, boring and meaningless story. I and my wife both dozed off in middle of the show. The models they have created are cute.
I doubt how good this really is even for those who understands German.
To top on it, they force you to check-in your bag and pay 1 Euro extra as if wasting 30€ and 1 Hr of your life...
