One of the historic churches that I enjoy visiting in Vienna is Augustinerkirche (Augustinian Church) located along Augustinerstrasse at the Hapsburg Palace. Augustinerkirche is the Imperial Church of the Hapsburg. Its history reaches back to the 14h-century, the church was the location of royal weddings during previous centuries, It is also the location of the Herzgruft (Heart Crypt) behind the beautiful Loreto Chapel. Unfortunately, this is off limits for visitors. While there is little to see of the church from the outside, the interior can quickly be appreciated for its Gothic characteristics. The nave is narrow, tall and with vaulted ceiling. There is a series of attractive chandeliers lining the main hall, leading to a decorative and attractive wooden alter in front of the church. Amongst other highlights of Augustinerkirche, I've always enjoyed viewing Canova's Cenotaph for Archduchess Maria Christina. This is an exquisite sculptural arrangement that is very enjoyable to look at. It is a masterpiece. Note: Visitors during High Mass can also be treated to excellent choir performances each Sunday. In the end, Augustinerkirche is a rather small church but one that is quite impressive for those with interesting in history an architecture.

Built in the 14th century, as part of an Augustine monastery, Augustine’s Church is historically significant as it houses the hearts of the Hapsburg royalty. It has beautiful Rococo-Style side chapels, and a really cool sculpture near the front door. With its monastic roots this is a fairly no-frills church in comparison to some of the more ostentatious churches around. It is definitely worth a visit if you enjoy history, are in Vienna, and have the time. A visit here is easily coupled with visits to the Albertina museum and multiple other churches and museums in the area.

The wedding of the famous couple - Princess Sisi and Emperor Francis Joseph I - took place in this church. If this wedding took place today, not only the invited guests would watch it, but thanks to television cameras, viewers all over the world could watch the entire ceremony. Subsequently, photographs and discussions about the ceremony, the wedding guests, the groom, and especially the bride and her wedding dress appeared in the press. But 200 years ago, everything was different. The Hofburg Palace, the residence of the Habsburgs in Vienna, was connected by a closed passage (today it no longer exists) to the Augustinian Church. František Jozef walked through this corridor directly with his bride Sisi to the church, where only selected invited guests were allowed to participate in the wedding ceremony. No representatives of the press or illustrators recorded this historical moment in the form of a detailed article or image. And so, as true as it sounds, there is certainly no surviving evidence of what kind of wedding dress Sisi was...
