Centrale for contemporary art — Attraction in Brussels

Saw the "Connected" exhibition (on a Sunday afternoon - August 16). The place as a building is nice, large and well renovated - the price of entry was really correct (5€) - but the curation of the exhibition was rather poor. Sold as an interactive dialogue between the visitor and the artist - there were no interaction whatsoever but movies on individual screens. There were some preparatory drawings from Wim Delvoye for Cloaca - his famous machine to produce human byproducts - and lots of other artist's abstracto-conceptual reflections on modern life. I personally felt it could have been students work - and was not on par with the expectations raised by the cover and ads in the city. Would recommend to visit any exhibition to see the place, but I personally only spent 30mn while I was expecting at...

Place with a lot of potential but very poor execution. The staff is unprepared to give information about what’s happening in the place. Also they can’t speak English. When saying goodbye, there was not even an answer. The gallery is divided into 3 different locations. That’s very inconvenient that you have to go from one building to another just to buy the tickets. The level of the exposition is low. The rooms are organised very badly and are not accessible by disabled persons, especially the building across the street where you must go up and down a metal spiral staircase. Voor de tweede keer de Centrale for Contemporary Art in Brussel. Ik was er voordien al een keer geweest en dat was me erg goed bevallen. Het museum is zes maanden dicht geweest voor een uitgebreide renovatie en is gevestigd in een voormalige elektriciteitscentrale. De nieuwe expo "hosting" kwam tot stand na een oproep aan kunstenaars in Brussel en de randgemeenten, zonder enige beperking inzake vorm of thema, waarna een geanonimiseerde selectie plaatsvond. Dit resulteerde in een tentoonstelling met werken uit verschillende disciplines: schilderkunst, tekeningen, grafiek, videokunst, fotografie, beeldhouwkunst, installaties en performancekunst. Er zijn niet minder dan 353 werken te zien van 247 kunstenaars. Een recensent vond dat wat veel, maar mij stoorde het niet. Er waren heel wat spannende werken bij van mij compleet onbekende artiesten. Ik heb veel ontdekkingen gedaan. Dezelfde recensent mopperde over het feit dat de geluidspoëzie in Loïs Soleils 'The ahole poem' aka F*BOY 101 and justified anger werd afgespeeld vlakbij de continu kloppende hamer in de video van Adèle Pasquiers 'Fake it until you make it': 'Niet alleen maakt dat het een hele opgave om te concentreren op deze werken, terwijl ze dat allebei absoluut verdienen, bovendien is het zo schier onmogelijk om op te gaan in de meer ingetogen creaties in dezelfde ruimte.'
