The Congregational Church of the Holy Mother is the largest Orthodox church in Sarajevo and one of the largest of its kind in the Balkans.

The foundation-stone was laid on June 25, 1863 and construction was completed 11 years later in 1874.

The designer of this lovely structure was Andrija Damjanović, who came from Veles (Macedonia) and was a member of the reputable Renzovski family. They had designed and embellished churches all over the Balkans – from Macedonia to Bulgaria and from Turkey to Bosnia.

There is an anecdote that tells of how Andrija had a discussion with the Sarajevo Orthodox Church Council about building the new structure. When they asked him to show some plans or sketches, he told them that there were none, for they need only look to the churches in Niš or Smederevo – the same church would be built in Sarajevo, only...

Orthodox cathedral of Sarajevo is really impressive building. Atmosphere inside presents oasis of Orthodox spirituality in the middle of city noise. Iconostasis is maybe the most important part. You can light a candle or buy some religious books and icons. As in every temple, the best time to visit and learn something about faith and culture is during worship. In this church you can smell incense and hear beautiful singing of Serbian Orthodox choir "Sloga" which young conductor I had honour to meet after Sunday liturgy. After service faithful gather in church for some coffee, biscuits and chat because only few of them still live...

This church is an insult to Christianity: It claims to be open daily 8-17:30, but I went at 17:00, and again at 11 and 14:30, all being rejected by the old door keeper with a straight face. No event was happening at the time of my visit and the door was not locked. I've never been to a church that rejects visitors like this one.

The only Orthodox Church in the old town area. Non parishioners are usually not allowed inside but thankfully our tour guide is an Orthodox Christian and got us in. Fun fact: the metal minarets/domes were all once taken away during the wars they have had to make munitions and weapons. Everything has since been rebuilt then.
