It is an almost exact replica of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1920, two years after the end of the First World War. The Cenotaph was unveiled in 1923 to commemorate the dead of the First World War. Initially, it was simply inscribed with the words “The Glorious Dead.” The dates 1939-1945 were later added to honour victims of the Second World War.
