After hearing from so many others who visited Monteverde or Santa Elena National Parks and were disappointed they didn't see many animals, I am glad I chose this park! Less than a minute on the trail, an agouti ran in front of me (I later saw many more foraging in different places). Shortly after, I saw a monkey and then a group of monkeys. And then the next trail I saw them again. Then 2 trails later, I saw them again and also saw a group of coatis eating in the trees!
I saw a few bellbirds, look at the highest branches in the bellbird area (there's a sign). They like to fly back and forth between the same branches so if you see one flying away just wait a few minutes and it'll likely come back! I heard many keel-billed toucans, but they were farther away. I also saw many butterflies, lizards, smaller brown or yellow birds, turkeys with bright red neck flaps (wattle?), colibris, bright yellow stick bugs, and more!
I spent 5 hours here walking all the trails. I stopped for so much animal watching and also a snack break. I was told people normally spend 2 hours and 45 minutes to walk all the trails. I arrived around 8:45am while the monkeys were eating their breakfast.
If you do not have a car, you can take a taxi to the ticket office for ₡3,000 one way or to the entrance by the road that's an easy 5 minutes walk for ₡1,500. There's also tourist shuttle companies that will take you roundtrip for $6, but you need to book those in advance and they have...
Read moreI went on an early morning self guided tour with a friend and we had a wonderful time! We chose the largest tour circling the park as well as the arboretum and it took us the indicated 3h - including stops to spit animals and take in the nature and views. We didn’t cross a single person which was great to have the whole reserve to ourselves
It was absolutely beautiful! There is a lot of flora to take in and if you’re quiet and patient enough, some fauna too.
We saw a few different species of birds, a pizote, a lot of different bugs and butterflies and with great patience an agouti (a big yet adorable rodent).
Download the guides available at the reception to get the most of it!
The price is totally reasonable too and much cheaper than the other...
Read moreA beautiful place. We visited with a very knowledgeable guide whose English was excellent. As was his knowledge of the forest, it's history, and the wildlife. We felt very honored to see the Bell Bird - apparently only 300 pairs remain in the world and we saw 3 on one branch. Plenty of beautiful birds to admire (and I'm not normally a bird watcher) plus the guide provided binoculars. We also spotted "mafia" monkeys, and huge troop of Coati and many different types and colour of butterfly. Oh, and a tarantula! Would highly recommend, the place was super quiet and the staff seemed genuinely grateful for our visit. Hopefully the forest can continue to expand and help to save more precious animals and plants. Loved every minute...
