I traveled to the Hotel Montaña Monteverde with a group, and the hotel appeared stunning with the gorgeous views all around. My jaw dropped at the view from my personal patio. However, after digging around a little bit more, there were a couple of things that scared a timid Midwesterner staying at this hotel. While the facilities at the Hotel Montaña Monteverde were wonderful, the cleanliness and night sleep were definitely lacking at this hotel.
First, the facilities. At the Hotel Montaña Monteverde, for being in a relatively remote location, the facilities were not bad at all. In fact, the rooms boasted patios/balconies (depending what floor you're staying on), pretty fast internet, large bathtubs, and a delectable breakfast assortment. For breakfast, there was an assortment of rice and beans, other classics, fruits, and juices - it was extremely delicious. There is no pool at this hotel. Additionally, there is no air conditioning in the rooms at this hotel. My Rating for this Category: 5/5
Second, the cleanliness. Like I said, I am a timid Midwesterner - bugs are not my thing. Unfortunately for me, because the hotel is in a remote location, bugs were a common occurrence. Two scorpions were waiting for me upon my arrival in the hotel room (see the attached photo of the one I found chilling on the floor in my bathroom) along with other insects such as spiders and cockroaches. I understand that these issues may be difficult to combat with the climate, but nonetheless, that is a legitimate cleanliness concern. While there were bugs in my room, everything else was clean, just a tad dated. My Rating for this Category: 2/5
Finally, the night sleep. Naturally, knowing that I had two scorpions in my room - I removed them before I went to bed - did not help my sleep situation. I was worried that there were going to be bugs and scorpions crawling around my bed during my sleep. Another important aspect to note is that there is no air conditioning in the hotel. With the hot days, when you go to bed, it can be extremely warm in the hotel room; however, when you wake up, it does get pretty cool in the room over night, so there is not a nice middle ground on sleeping temperature. The bed and pillows, on the other hand, were comfortable. My Rating for this Category: 2/5
For being pretty high up in a remote location, the Hotel Montaña Monteverde did serve its purpose alright; however, it was extremely difficult to fully enjoy my room knowing that I could have scorpions and other bugs in my room at any time. Like I said, definitely a change of pace for a Midwesterner. So, while the facilities at the hotel were nice given its location, I did struggle with the bugs and the night sleep. If a rustic, jungle hotel lifestyle if what fits your life, I can easily recommend this hotel; however, if you are looking for a modern, bug-free hotel in Costa Rica, I cannot...
Read moreThis hotel has many large tour buses coming and going. One morning around 7 AM a good deal of the buffet was depleted. We were asking for coffee and fruit. The only thing to9 recommend this hotel is the spectacular view - especially from the balcony attached to the large dining area. We were told it was one of the first hotels in Monteverde and it would seem it is resting on its laurels. At Hotel Montana Monteverde there is NO SAFE or lock box ! At least not in my room.I had to wear my money belt the entire time . The front desk (Pepe) in particular were abrupt and not available after 9 pm. My room had screens that came off from the outside so to open window to air it out from highly scented chemical cleaning products, I had to stay in my room for over an hour !!!!! I asked not to use these products at reception which they said they would take care of and left notes in Spanish for maid which were ignored. Many people have issues around chemical use. There were NO ROOM PHONES 📞 so to contact main reception one had to trudge up the high hills to top or incur roaming charges. Also buffet was depleted second day of breakfast with so many big groups and we had to ask for more coffee , fruit etc . They need to upgrade and provide small room safes and phone service to front desk as a minimum. Didn't see much of the grounds as it was very hilly and I had injured my knee. They were good about giving me a handicapped room so I could avoid all the steep climbing. I would have preferred to be in the main building to at least have a view but was willing to forgo to have level walking and walk in shower. Tubs in the new section down the hill were...
Read moreWe stayed here as part of a tour package and were given the furthest room down the side of a mountain. Had to do a seriously steep hike up or down. The hotel room was extremely old fashioned and whilst spotlessly clean smelled overpoweringly of disinfectant The bed was very hard and the bedding very worn and elderly. The bathroom was vintage 1970s but lots of hot water. Poor wifi. No telephone or means of contacting reception in the event of an emergency so we felt a bit isolated. The staff were not very friendly and mostly ignored us.||Breakfast was shockingly bad. My daughter missed out on the second because the first day was so bad. Only highlight was the homemade jam. ||Apart from all that it had good views and lovely gardens that are very well looked after. There were lizards in the rocks and several big spiders but the best of all was the coati that lived there. |Don’t eat here but there are three decent restaurants a...
