The Lotrščak Tower is a fortified tower in an old part of the town called Gradec or Gornji grad (Upper Town). The tower, which dates to the 13th century, was built to guard the southern gate of the Gradec town wall. The name is derived from Latin campana latrunculorum, meaning "thieves' bell", referring to a bell hung in the tower in 1646 to signal the closing of the town gates. Interesting little piece of history indeed. From the top deck you can see the red-tiled rooftops of the Upper Town, the sprawl of the lower city, and the distant hills and mountains framing everything beautifully. The climb is steep and narrow (about three floors of stairs with a small museum of historical photos and cannon exhibits along the way), so it might not be ideal for anyone with serious mobility issues, but the payoff is absolutely worth it. Read moreA must-see attraction that is unique to Zagreb, this tower gives you a clear 360-degree view of the entire city, which makes for good photo opportunities and an unforgettable experience. You'll need to climb the narrow staircase of the tower to reach the top though, and we were lucky that when we visited there was no one around so not sure how it would be like with crowds.
The main feature of the tower is of course the cannon that fires at noon everyday and if you are someone who does not mind loud sound (but please, bring thick earmuffs it's really quite loud), you can try your luck hanging around the tour at noon.
