I’m honestly very very VERY disappointed with this place, it is not because it is a poor memorial, it’s fantastic, but their customer service is ridiculous. On the website they pride themselves on educating the public, they include information and teacher kits, yet when we arrived in a group and realized that they did not take groups. They wouldn’t even allow them to go in four at a time or two at a time. We said we would divide up and go to other locations and wouldn’t linger and they still said absolutely not. I don’t understand why a memorial would refuse people from paying their respects ESPECIALLY when they are abiding by your rules. Terrible customer service. The man said “you are making me tired!” And waved his hand in my face and shewed me away.

As a history teacher, and someone whose family was tragically affected by WWII, with military background whose finally in Paris, I couldn’t be more angry and...

Dedictaed to the French citizens who lost their lives in hte concentration camps, the place is right at the tip of the Ile de la Cite, past the Notre dame cathedral. The entrance is free and so is the audio- guide. The place has some serenity despite the gory details it contains. There is a note on the wall, forgive but don't forget! And that is what makes this place worth visiting. It takes almost 40-50 minutes even if you read each information panel and take the audio-guide tour. And worth spending time to know what people went through and life is a privilege many of us take...

This seems to be a hidden gem near the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Our group was the only ones there on a midday. This really hits home to how impactful WWII was and the impact that the Nazi's had in such an outreaching area. It really makes you understand how life was like for everyone in the early 1940's. Some of the information will astound everyone. For a WWII student this will really shine as a place to have to stop by in Paris. It is a very...

‼️TW; Death and suffering, Holocaust memorial Often overlooked by visitors to Paris, the Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation, or Deportation Memorial, is located just behind Notre Dame Cathedral on Île de la Cité. ❤️It is a quiet, understated place that serves as a deeply moving memorial to the 200,000 people who were deported from occupied France to Nazi concentration camps. 🤍As the plaque on the floor of the memorial’s underground chamber chillingly states: “They descended into the mouth of the earth and they did not return.” 💙The memorial was designed by French modernist architect Georges-Henri Pingusson, who WANTED to create a place that would allow visitors to reflect on this terrible episode WITHOUT allowing them to feel at all comfortable with it. 🔸To this end, he decided to create a long subterranean corridor which would evoke a feeling of claustrophobia. This is accessed via a hexagonal rotunda, which is in turn reached by a staircase coming down from ground level. 🔸Descending from the constant noise of Paris’ city centre, the sudden silence is unsettling, but allows for an undistracted, much fuller experience of the memorial itself. Moving on from the two chapels off the rotunda, which contain bones and earth brought from concentration camps, you will come to the tomb of an unknown deportee. 🔸Lining the walls of this long chamber are 200,000 glass crystals, representing the deported Jews, homosexuals, Rom and political opponents of Nazism, which glow eerily with illumination from behind. Combined with literary inscriptions on the walls, the emotional effect is overwhelming. —————————————————- #parishistory #paristour #holocaustmemorialparis #secretparis

A somber place to visit, but I am so glad we took the time and opportunity to add this into our schedule. As someone from the US, to see a memorial for those sent to the camps was heart-wrenching. I am glad there is a memorial dedicated to their lives. Its free and not very large, but if you take the time to read through the exhibits which are in a few languages, it's worth spending a bit of time here.

It is a space that realizes the cruel traces of World War II. Not only the photographs and exhibitions of the time, but also the special structure, it is possible to feel the fear of the prisoners. I think that this space of cruelty and horror is not created underground. It is recommended as a place to visit rather than a restaurant in Paris.
