The land along Notre Dame Cathedral was occupied until the 1830s by the Archbishop's Palace. Famous for its beauty, the size of its rooms and its garden designed by Gabriel Thouin, it was unfortunately ransacked by the anti-legitimist riots of February 14, 1831. Shaved, it was replaced by a garden in 1837. In 1850, Viollet-Le Duet and Lassus built the presbytery and the sacristy of Notre Dame Cathedral, which adjoins the garden.
Count Rambuteau, prefect of the Seine from 1833 to 1848, was responsible for the creation of the current garden. Completed in 1844, it was the first public garden neighborhood. It required the demolition of unhealthy houses dating from the Middle Ages, which still characterized Paris at that time. There are so many cell phones walking their owners that's you can watch Darwinism at its finest. No one really pays any attention. It's no wonder there are police everywhere to try and prevent people from hurting themselves by walking into traffic. The cathedral is amazing. It's under construction as it always is. Read moreWent here with my wife & 18 year old daughter. My daughter was quite keen to go in and explore. It felt & smelt as if we'd stepped back in time. What surprised me was how interesting my daughter found it to be. Looking and reading patently at almost everything. It was quite moving in one of the chapels as a young woman obviously upset over something was opening her heart to her God. Historically it was, is a place to visit. Just outside there's a street train ride that takes you around the cathedral and city centre. Well worth the 50min of your time. In the hot summer check out the nearby plaza with pavement fountain.
