COMPLAINT AGAINST "CAFE PANIS" (PARIS, NOTRE DAME)
My name is Miguel Fuentes, I am a chilean Master student in London.
I write here to inform to the public that today (October 10, 15 hrs) I was discriminated and expelled of the restaurant "CAFE PANIS" without the possibility of make any kind of complaint. The latter supported for the managers (manager and su-manager) of the restaurant.
To sum up the situation:
1-The manager refused to give me service in the restaurant. On the contrary, they told me that I needed to leave the restaurant.
2-The managers did not allow me to make a formal complaint in the restaurant: for example, a written complaint. This last even when that it is a right of any customer. I was told that "no complaints" in that restaurant.
3-The main manager of the restaurant took my bag without my permission, this when I refused to leave the restaurant before making a formal complaint.
4-The managers told me that they were calling the police, refusing to give me the book of complaints. When I said them that I will leave the restaurant when the police arrived in order to denounce them, they did not give me any answer.
5-Before leaving the restaurant, the manager were laughing together about this situation. In fact, one of them (the main manager) told me at that moment that maybe in my country I am able to do a complaint, but not in this city (Paris), what is a clear act of discrimination.
At that moment, I got out the restaurant to find a Police Station to make a denounce for this act of bad treat and discrimination.
All of this was originated because I asked to talk with the manager about the very bad service that I received (before) when I tried to do my order.
At that moment, when I tried to ask to the waiter something related to the menu, he answered me in a very bad manner saying that I need to "understand the menu" by myself because he was so busy and he can not help me.
After this, when I asked to the waitress if he is french (because I thought he could be latin american) in order to talk with him in spanish (my language), he started to accuse me of "discrimination"... what is ridiculous because I am not french and, in fact, I am latin american as well.
I explained after to the sub manager (who was laughing all the time) all of this, but what happened after is what I described in the first part of this message. At that moment the sub-manager told me that It was better that I leave the restaurant because I was using electricity to charge my mobile.
In conclusion, I think that is a shame this kind of service in a french tourist restaurant. As I said, a very bad, discriminative and maybe racists behaviour.
I recommend any tourist to avoid "Cafe Panis", in one of the corner of the square of the Notre Dame. Every restaurant has a better service than "Cafe Panis", mainly if the tourist is not french.
I inform also that I am doing the paperwork for a report in the police station and a denounce in some journals of Paris (Le Parisien). I have also contacted with some organizations in Paris related to tourist activities and cultural institutions in Latin America which have a record of this kind of discriminatory acts.
This organizations will evaluate, after a investigation, to put this restaurant (Caf Panis) in a list in order to recommend tourists to avoid this kind of places. I am also doing complaints in some trip pages as TridAdvisor, etc.
I demand also a formal answer of...
Read moreOkay, so this place is surprisingly good. Or, at least it is for breakfast.
We walked by it many times since it was so near our hotel. We always carefully avoided it due to its touristy appearance and its dangerous name, only one vowel away from disaster. However, one early morning we walked by it again, in an attempt to find a different breakfast place nearby. Sadly, that other cafe seemed to be a victim of COVID, or at least it was closed, contrary to the posted hours.
Though I was hungry, I am always willing to go the extra mile for good food. My husband, on the other hand, was just hungry and cranky and willing to go anywhere at all. I was still wary of Cafe Panis, located conveniently across the river from the famous Notre-Dame cathedral, but hubby was just happy enough that they appeared to be open.
At least, I think they were open. The door was open, but no one else was in there, and staff was busy cleaning the windows. I didn't notice any posted hours to know for sure, but they pointed us toward an empty table all the same. A friendly waitress soon appeared to take our order. We each ordered breakfast, of a sort. I went for the "Parisien" iteration, whereas my husband got the huge Continental breakfast. I think this is an instance where a picture really is worth a thousand words, but suffice it to say that both of our breakfasts were surprisingly good, and not a bad value, either!
Stopping in here for breakfast wound up being a happy surprise. After my experience, I can now suggest going to Cafe Panis for breakfast,...

We would normally avoid any restaurant this close to a tourist hotspot, but my wife has been coming here for years and they are still as good as they were years ago. The decor is traditional, the service fast and the manager cheerful. When we were thinking of a spot where we could eat with family visiting for just a day this place hit all our criteria.
We arrived early with the little one and the manager swiftly served her a menthe a l'eau and helped her calm down as the rest of our party arrived. We order a bottle of wine to share which was reasonably priced and delicious. The beer looked over priced despite being from one of the best local breweries. The food is simple, traditional and hit the spot. This isn't the sort of place we go for the food but the steak frite was tasty, the tartare not too bad and the croque monsieur bang on the money.
With a four year old, two teenagers, a vegetarian, us brits and some parisiennes. We were happy to have something to please everyone and would recommend this spot if you want a quick lunch with a great view with real...
