Granitschale im Lustgarten — Attraction in Berlin

One of the interesting things to see at Lustgarten on Museum Island is the Granitschale landmark. This is a 70 ton bowl which was carved out of single slab of granite and placed directly in front of the Altes Museum in 1828.

The construction of Granitschale was ordered by King Friedrich Wilhelm III and was fashioned after Nero's Golden House bowl which is located at the Vatican Museum in Rome. At the time of construction, this was considered the largest bowl structure in the world.

Note: During our December visit, a metal top had been placed over the bowl to protect it from cold winter temperatures. This will likely remain until Spring 2017. Im Lustgarten vor dem Alten Museum steht die größte aus einem einzelnen Stein gefertigte Schale der Welt.

Die riesige, aus rotem Granit gefertigte Schale galt in der Biedermeierzeit als technisches Wunderwerk.

Die gigantische Granitschale hat ein Durchmesser von 6,91 Metern, ein Umfang von 21,7 Meter und wiegt rund 75 Tonnen.

Entstanden ist sie aus einer Art Wettstreit, den sich König Friedrich Wilhelm III. mit dem Duke of Schale Devonshire lieferte. Als die königliche Hoheit erfuhr, dass dieser bei dem Steinmetz Cantian eine große Schale aus Granit bestellt hatte, orderte er 1826 bei ihm ebenfalls ein solches Kunstwerk, das allerdings weitaus größer sein sollte als das des britischen Gesandten.
