I made a last-minute booking (24 hours) with the team at Insider Berlin tour team. Firstly, Mike - the representative from the tour company was a great communicator and promptly confirmed my tour, provided further information regarding the booking and answered all my queries. For a tour of such gravity, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Ioana (pronounced Joanna). She was really the subject matter expert, and I couldn't have asked for a better and more knowledgeable guide. We met at the front of my hotel at the selected time and experienced local and regional trains out to Oranienburg, where we opted to catch a short taxi ride (about 6 Euros) to the camp. With Ioana's explanation of the thoughts and impact that was put behind the camp with historical background, the context of how Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp fit into Nazi history was an eye-opening and humbling experience. Ioana was professional and kind, offered excellent local knowledge in between WWII conversations, and completely tailored my experience based on my knowledge. It was a long day (16,000 steps by the time I got back to the hotel) but thoroughly enjoyable. For those contemplating a private tour, it was worth every penny (or Euro in this case) I've spent. Thank you, Ioana and Insider Berlin tour team, for a great experience!

We booked the Sachsenhausen Insider (English) guided tour on Tue, and had the fortune to be accompanied by Tina as our guide. Her passion for Berlin (she takes other tours as well), love and in depth knowledge of modern history, and ability to paint the context as to 'why' events occurred (not just 'what' occurred) made the tour an exceptional day. Also nice to be accompanied by a fellow Aussie (along with about 20 in the group). Tina is also great to chat to if you need to brush up on relevant modern history and background events. It is a tour where you are on your feet for several hours, and can involve a 20 min walk from the station to site / back if the bus connection doesnt work. Bring something to eat on arrival (no food once on the tour), and lots of warm clothes if cold (the site is exposed). Zone ABC ticket for the train. We stayed back to have a closer look at some of the museums the tour group cannot visit. A deeply moving experience, and important to see. Lest we forget how easily such atrocities could happen again. Worth visiting the free Palace of Tears between 9am and the tour start at 10am, as tour starts right beside this really interesting free museum, about the Berlin Wall.

I was captivated by the wealth of historical insight and cultural depth offered during the 3-hour insider tour of Berlin with guide Campbell. His meticulous accounts of Berlin’s World War history and the poignant events of the Holocaust, coupled with his ability to connect past events to present-day implications, made for an incredibly enriching experience. From exploring the profound significance of “Trains to Life” and “Trains to Death” to delving into the architectural scars of war and standing before iconic land dmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust memorial, every moment was a blend of education and reflection. Campbell’s passion shone through as he guided us through the city’s narrative, providing context to the German constitution, the Reichstag Building, the holocaust memorial, even figures like Georg Elser and lastly the topographiedes terrors. This insider tour not only shed light on Berlin’s history but also offered a unique perspective on its remarkable resilience and rebirth. For anyone seeking an immersive journey through Berlin’s past and present, I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing it through the eyes of guide Campbell.

Rebecca was our exceptional guide for the walking tour, leading our group of about ten people on an itinerary that unfolded precisely as promised and concluded just over two hours. What truly set Rebecca apart was her ability to bring each location to life with concise and relevant storytelling. Some of her narratives were deeply thought-provoking, especially considering Berlin's profound history over the past 150 years. Coming to Berlin, I honestly hadn't anticipated enjoying it quite so much. As an avid reader with a particular interest in World War II, having just come from Auschwitz-Birkenau, I was especially keen to see how Berlin confronts this period. I was genuinely impressed by the city's forthright acknowledgment of its past and the numerous reminders of the immense human cost of the war. Taking Rebecca's tour as my introduction to Berlin was the perfect decision. While two hours can only scratch the surface of such a historically rich city, particularly concerning WWII, her tour provided an invaluable foundation. It undoubtedly inspired me to revisit many of the sites later at my own pace for deeper reflection. What I appreciated most was Rebecca's ability to distill complex historical information with sensitivity and impact. For instance, insights I gleaned after spending over two hours examining photographs at the Reichstag building and the Topography of Terror were conveyed by Rebecca in a succinct yet powerful five-minute explanation. The way she presented the history at the parking lot and at the Reichstag building were particularly memorable. I wholeheartedly recommend Rebecca's tour to anyone with even a passing interest in history, especially World War II. It's an excellent way to gain a crucial initial perspective on this...

We did the Insider Third Reich Tour last week with Mikhail originally from Russia, but having lived in Berlin for many years. We also did the Cold War Tour with Xavier later in the week (see further down) We were a group of 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Third Reich Tour: It was an incredibly riveting fascinating and interesting tour and covered the major sites relating to Third Reich history in Berlin. Mikhail explained the events and context relating to each site and brought in personal experiences which enhanced the tour. He also included other Berlin sites of importance and some Cold War sites too. He welcomed questions and answered all our questions in depth. He was a very nice and knowledgeable tour guide and delivered the information in an engaging way. The group was not too big. Many thanks for a great tour.

Cold War Tour: The tour with Xavier was equally brilliant. We visited several key Cold War sites and learned all about the Wall, how and when it went up, how families and friends were wrenched apart by it, the structure of it (the death strip, rabid dogs, watch towers etc.) successful and unsuccessful escapes, how the U-Bahn was guarded to prevent escapes, life in the DDR, the Stasi and so much more. It was absolutely fascinating and of course very sad in parts. Xavier was a very friendly and knowledgeable guide, and his sense of humour helped to lighten the heavy and sad subject matter. Toilet stops built in. Not too big a group. Train taken to save using up precious time walking to sites (good idea, more time to learn and look at things - have your train ticket ready). 3 hours just flew. I liked the way he ended on a positive note - essentially that Berlin went through 2 dictatorships, survived and came out the other side....

Last week we had two tours with Insider Tour Berlin. One to Potsdam, and another to Sachsenhausen Concentration camp.

We had the pleasure of joining a tour to Potsdam with guide Maria, and it was an enriching and memorable experience. Maria's expertise, enthusiasm, and deep knowledge of the city's history brought each landmark to life. Her captivating storytelling style, warm personality, and inclusive approach created a welcoming atmosphere, allowing everyone in the group to feel valued and involved. Maria's attention to detail, professionalism, and organizational skills ensured a seamless and enjoyable tour. From hidden gems to fascinating anecdotes, Maria's passion for Potsdam was contagious, making the tour truly unforgettable. I highly recommend Maria as a guide for anyone seeking a delightful and enlightening exploration of the beauty and history of Potsdam.

We had a tour to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp with Martin. From the moment we embarked on our tour, Martin's genuine passion for preserving the memory of the victims and educating visitors was evident. His deep understanding of the historical context, combined with his empathy and sensitivity, created an atmosphere that fostered both reflection and respect for the countless lives affected by the horrors of the camp. Martin's storytelling abilities were remarkable. With each step we took, he wove together narratives that painted a vivid picture of the camp's past, conveying the unimaginable suffering endured by the prisoners. His attention to detail and ability to humanize the stories of individuals within the broader historical context were truly commendable.

We would like to thank our wonderful guides and insider tours for these...
