His name is possibly associated with Ares, the God of War or the Ares - Erinyes or Semnes chthonic deities of punishment and revenge. According to mythology, the god Ares was tried there for killing Poseidon's son Alirrothios.Another trial said to have taken place here was that of Orestes, who was alleged to have killed his mother Clytemnestra, and her lover Aegisthus. It was a meeting place for the judicial body of the Parliament, the Supreme Court, which judged cases of premeditated murder, sacrilege and arson. On the hill, in the middle of the 1st century, took place the very first Christian preaching by Apostle Paul to Areopagites, the members of the court. A few of the members converted to Christianity, including the famous Dionysius Areopagites, the patron saint of Athens, who according to tradition became the first bishop of the city. His speech is commemorated with a bronze plaque that you can see at the foot of the rock. Archaeological findings in the area near the rocky hill, including the remains of a settlement, suggest that one of the oldest cemeteries in Athens was located there, with tombs dating from the Mycenaean and Geometric Periods. From the rock, the visitor has the opportunity to observe almost the entire archaeological site of the Acropolis, the Propylaia, its northern slope, the old agora, the temple of Hephaestus and the hill of the Muses ( Filopappou) and Pnyx hill. An impressive view! When visiting you must watch your step! It is a rocky hill and can be quite slippery. In the past you had to climb stairs carved into the rock itself, but now there is a metal ladder to climb the rock easier and...
