Statue of Anonymous — Attraction in Budapest

The Statue of Anonymus is a bronze sculpture from 1903 located in the garden of Vajdahunyad Castle. It looks creepy. It was erected in memory of a hitherto unknown author of Gesta Hungarorum, which is a chronicle of the Hungarians from their settlement in the Danube plain of Pannonia, in 896 to the early Middle Ages. Anonymous is depicted sitting as a hooded figure with almost no face visible, presumably to confirm that he is Anonymous. He holds a pen in one hand, and with the other he holds a book next to him, in which his notes should be. At the base under his feet there is an inscription Latin "Anonymus gloriosissimi bela regis notarius", which a translator translates as "Anonymous reporter of the most glorious battles of the king". In the courtyard of Vidhunyad palace, there’s one statue that I recommend to see - that’s of Statue of Anonymous! No one knows who exactly he is (hence Anonymous!) but he was considered as the History Chronicler, only know to have used “Master P” as his identity.

Anonymus már-már mint a Sith-Rend tagja ül a trónján, szinte fenyegetően néz az érdeklődő felé. A csuklya alatt a fej sötétbe burkolózik, csak igen közelről lehet látni, hogy létezik az arc is. Jobb kezében jedi-kard helyett mégis egy vastag ceruza, amely az írót, a krónikást hívatott megjeleníteni, a bal keze ölelésében pedig egy kódexszerű iromány, ami nem más, mint a "Gesta Hungarorum" , azaz a "magyarok viselt dolgai", nemzetünk első írott krónikája, Anonymus tollából. A szobor alkotója Ligeti Miklós, aki eredetileg Zrínyi Miklós alakját szerette volna megformálni, de a pályázaton mégis olyan vázlatot alkotott, ami végül az eredeti szobor mintája lett: a zsűriben óriási vitát kavart az arc nélküli ábrázolás. Végül a második körben a harminc fősre bővült szoborbizottság egyhangúlag a csuklyás változat mellett döntött.

Több helyszín is szóba került az elhelyezésnél. A Vajdahunyad várbeli választás jól sikerült, mert a szobor 1902 óta változatlanul itt áll. Az ismertségéhez hozzájárult, hogy a Zsolnay gyár kicsinyítve porcelán változatban évtizedek óta forgalmazza Anonymus Ligeti által megálmodott alakját.
