Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage Sites that is a working railway station, handling some of the busiest rail traffic and the most massive crowds in the world! While running through the station at rush hour, it is easy to miss the amazing architecture which makes it a world heritage site, which is why a section of the main building has been opened to the public as a Heritage Gallery.

The main section of the CST Heritage Gallery is all about the history of Indian railways, especially, the Great Indian Peninsular Railway or GIPR. The Victoria Terminus was built as the headquarters of GIPR, and all over the building, you can see the four letters intertwined in the unmistakable logo of the precursor of Indian Railways. The museum section has miniature models of the building as well as trains and engines as they evolved from steam to diesel and finally, electric. There are old photos as well as advertisements, tickets, and flyers, all telling the story of the development of the railways and the city itself.

Heritage Tour takes you through the winding staircase with a view of the impressive dome from the inside. The gorgeous stained glass reflecting the light falling on the ancient stone is an impressive sight, as are the intricate carvings on the pillars depicting a variety of animals. The elaborately carved peacock on the first-floor window is something that cannot be missed! On the outside, the faces of the founders are a constant reminder of the forethought and perseverance which gave rise to Indian railways, and it is awe-inspiring to think of the effort which went into making this the world heritage site that it is today!

Note: The gallery is open to the public on weekdays between 3 PM and 5 PM. It is closed on weekends and public holidays. The entry charges are Rs. 200 for adults and Rs. 100 for children, but the tour is worth every penny. A guide is assigned to every group of visitors, and people are not allowed in...

Artifacts galore: mini‑models of trains, vintage photographs, era‑old railway tickets, letters, and the actual GIPR time‑bill from 1869 .

Stunning interior: stained glass, carved peacock motifs, cast‑iron staircases, and expert craftsmanship by Indian and British artisans .

What to know:

Ticket price is ₹200 for adults, ₹100 for students—with valid ID .

Room for improvement:

Some visitors feel it’s a bit pricy (~₹500 via third-party booking), though most agree it’s worth it for the depth and quality of the experience .

A few mentions of sub‑optimal lighting placements—but that’s a minor quibble in context .

Why you’ll love it:

Perfect for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, rail fans, and even kids, thanks to engaging guided storytelling .

Offers rare access to areas usually off‑limits—like the upper dome and heritage staircases .

A meaningful victory of public heritage preservation, where passion meets purpose .

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Heritage Museum, nestled within Mumbai's iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a captivating glimpse into India's rich railway history. Established in 2012 by Central Railways, the museum is housed in the architecturally stunning CSMT building, renowned for its blend of Victorian Gothic and traditional Indian architectural styles .

Visitors can explore a diverse collection of artifacts that chronicle the evolution of Indian Railways. Highlights include scale models of historic trains such as the GIP1, Vande Bharat Express, and the Shinkansen E5 Bullet Train, as well as a 1:4 scale model of the Barsi Light Railway steam locomotive . The museum also features heritage lamps, station bells, medical tools, and Mangalore tiles from old railway stations, each accompanied by QR codes that provide digital storytelling to enhance the visitor experience.

In celebration of International Museum Day 2025, the museum embraced the theme "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities," emphasizing its role in preserving history and educating future generations . First things first... NO ONE knows how to book the tickets for this. I asked 3 security guards at the very gate of this building and they didn't know! Then one guy vaguely told me to do it on bookmyshow. But the portal does not have any show or event by this name 'CSMT Heritage Museum'. One guard allowed me to go inside to enquire in the office & a good Samaritan told me to check by the name 'The crown jewel of mumbai' on bookmyshow. How will anyone relate this name with this show?? Nevertheless post navigating through portal issues I was able to book the tickets online & we waited for our guide to join us. Sadly, there are only 2 slots on weekends 11AM & 4 PM and only 1 slot on weekdays of 4PM. Sharvari, our tour guide, explained to us very nicely about the structure, history, architecture & pointed out small nuances added in the megastructure by the sculptors. Its an approximate 1 hour tour, but the old world charm & the essence of Bombay & its history stays with you throughout the day!

This Heritage structure which we all keep seeing everyday. A walk inside this building is one of a captivating journey through time. They have made an effort and curated all the exhibits inside with utmost care. One Must have to book the tickets through Book my show and this ticket costs around 500 bucks. Expensive! Isn't it? But the knowledge you get of Mumbai from this museum is immeasurable. We usually have one guide with us throughout the walk inside the building as it is a protected area and no outsiders are allowed without their guide. They will give you a round of the blocks on all levels and also explain the history of the architecture in detail. It is a must visit for all the history buffs and one who loves historical and monumental places.
