Nishinotōin Shokudō (Maido Ōkini Shokudō) — Restaurant in Kyoto

I went here where I was the only westerner. On the 1st day, I was not ignored, but didnt get any special service.

I guess they just thought I went in there by accident ..LOL (a gaijin).

It was canteen food ie you walk along on a tray & pick food from a sliding door cabinet or bench. Most customers were probably 60-80 years old.

Maybe 6-7 small dishes cost all up 1300yen.

I went there for the next 3 days for lunch so the staff knew I was purposely going there.

After the 1st day, I was treated sooo well, staff smiling etc. Of course I was selecting Hijiki, Kinpira, Renkon, Kampyo maki etc and yea, these people new I was not a normal boring tourist.

Been going to Japan since 1987.

But it was still one of the best places I always remember. Super cheap, nothing outstanding. But still never forgotten experience.

By far the worst food I have had during my last 6 months in Japan.

Even supermarket meal sets are far better than this! This restaurant offers a buffet of already cold, pre-made, severely overpriced dishes. You literally have to warm up your food in a microwave 😂 In a RESTAURANT! I don't know if I should laugh or cry. And it's not even cheap - you could actually get the exact same stuff, but FRESHLY MADE and tasty, for LESS than their prices. It's a genuine mystery to me as to why anyone would ever go to such a place.

I cannot see a single merit - not the food, not the service, not the atmosphere, not the prices, not the convenience - absolutely nothing make this worth a visit. Went here for breakfast and the food was pretty good, considering the type of restaurant and the prices. The restaurant is very clean and the staff are very nice and courteous. All the food we had were made fresh and some we had to wait until it was prepared. So, all the food is made fresh. All the food tasted very good. Love their croquettes, and the vegetable dishes.
