Minamimido — Attraction in Osaka

Forget what you think a Buddhist temple should be. At this temple, ancient tradition crashes headfirst into 21st-century LED wizardry — and it works. Oh, it works.

We showed up after dark, expecting solemn shadows and incense. Instead? The place straight-up woke up. Interactive lights spilled across the temple courtyard like digital lotus petals doing a synchronized swim. The pavement turned into a psychedelic pond, complete with koi darting beneath your feet — and yes, they respond to you. Move around and the projection morphs like a living thing. QR codes floated in the mix too, like little invitations from the metaverse.

Look up, and the ceiling grid above pulses with an underwater dream. Not metaphorically — actual digital fish swim between panels. It’s like being inside a high-tech aquarium, except you’re standing in front of a centuries-old religious sanctuary. The irony? Delicious.

The best part? It’s not crowded. You don’t have to elbow through hordes of influencers doing choreographed dances. This place is still flying under the radar — temple serenity meets interactive art installation, minus the pretentious gallery vibes.

Minamimido at night is what happens when Kyoto’s spiritual grace gets drunk with Tokyo’s tech scene and decides to throw a laser show. It’s free. It’s brilliant. It’s pure Osaka — humble, weird, and somehow...

The temple is situated right in the busy city, with a giant main hall. I collected stamps and a goshuin here as a reminder of my visit here. The cleaner helped guide me to the reception desk. Other tourists were here by bus, so it's quite a popular area. Yet it is also very clean and spacious for cars. 大阪市内のど真ん中、梅田から難波までを貫く南行き一方通行の大きな道路、御堂筋。この名前の由来にもなったのが、沿道にある二つの御堂（お寺のお堂）。 そのひとつは“浄土真宗本願寺派津村別院”、通称“北御堂（きたみどう）”。そしてもうひとつがこちらの“真宗大谷派難波別院”、通称「南御堂（みなみみどう）」です。 大阪メトロの本町駅から御堂筋の西側の歩道を難波方面（南）に向かって歩くと、程なくビルの壁面に「南御堂」と書かれた黒い看板（？）が見えてきます。 でも見えているのは現代的な黒っぽいビルだし、一体どこにお寺が！？、と思いながら歩いていると、ビルの真ん中が空洞になっていて、その向こうにお寺の大きなお堂がドーンと現れて驚かされます。 実はこのビルはお寺の山門で、一般的な山門は木造瓦葺きで、大きなお寺であれば左右に金剛力士像が睨みを効かせていたりするのですが、こちらの山門はホテルや飲食店の入った巨大なビルだという何とも斬新な造りになっています。 ビルの下を歩いてお堂の方に向かうのには少し勇気が必要ですが、どなたでもお堂の中に入って礼拝が可能なので、奥の建物が気になったという方は、気軽に訪れてみてはと思います。 ただしこちらはあくまでもお寺なので、酒気を帯びて訪れたり、境内や堂内で騒いだり、マナー違反となる言動は慎みましょう。 境内には文禄年間（1593年～1596年）に造られた梵鐘や、こちらのすぐ近くで最期を迎えた松尾芭蕉の辞世の句「旅に病で...
