GNR - Museu da Guarda Nacional Republicana — Attraction in Lisbon

This museum could be so much better. The course of history itself is really interesting. Unfortunately they arranged it in an intrasparent confusing order. I like going through a historical museum with the option to follow the timeline. There was no arrrow on the ground or anything, but labels with year numbers. But after reaching the highest year, later their was a department for the very early history again. And then a room with history from in between. That was really demotivating for me, because I couldn't follow the story. There were lot's of nice exhibition pieces, too. But if the overall structure is not clear, I can't really enjoy...

O Museu da Guarda Nacional Republicana está situado no Quartel do Carmo, Lisboa! Um museu que perpetuará na história a Revolução de 25 de Abril (também conhecida pela revolução dos cravos) Foi neste Local em 1974 que por iniciativa de um grupo de militares, cercaram o quartel, forçando a demissão de Marcelo Caetano. Ou melhor dizendo, foi aqui que terminaram 48 anos de fascismo Segundo revela o site da GNR, no qual é relatada a história do quartel, e do seu fundador (Condestável D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, heróico vencedor da Batalha de Aljubarrota de 1385) que em 1389, mandou colocar a primeira pedra. Oito anos depois foi ocupado pelos frades Carmelitas de Moura, tendo sido doado à Ordem do Carmo. Em 1423, o Santo Condestável despojou-se das suas riquezas materiais e vestiu o hábito de donato Carmelita neste seu convento. Aqui habitou uma pequena cela onde faleceu a 1 de Abril de 1431. Um quartel com mais de 600 anos de história, e 400 anos como Convento Carmelita,200 anos como Comando das Guardas Militares da Polícia. É desde 1910-1911 o Comando-geral da Guarda Nacional Republicana. No Largo do Carmo tem excelentes restaurantes, bares com óptimas esplanadas arborizadas para lhe proporcionar ali um dia bem passado onde não faltam animadores. No quartel do Carmo, na varanda no 1º andar tem uma vista deslumbrante para a baixa pombalina e para a colina mais alta de Lisboa (o Castelo de São Jorge. Nice museu. Went in for a quick visit and really enjoyed it. Not standard and boring. Free to go in. Lots of information about the history of the police/guard and it was enjoyable seeing the old guns, flags, uniforms and motorcycles. If you have extra time and you are in the area, it's a nice visit and since you don't pay, you don't mind if you skip stuff or it's a quick viewing.
