This site was built in the light of a project by the Spanish architect known by the name of Santiago Calatrava, and was completed in 1998 to serve visitors to Expo 98 and later Parque das Nações. Its inauguration was carried out on 19 May 1998 and was already considered to be the largest intermodal station in Portuguese territory. As far as its architecture is concerned, the aforementioned gare is characterized by a single atrium with large dimensions and that extends over the nave opening only in its tops over the railroad tracks and with communication through stairs located laterally. Its artistic achievement was aimed at enhancing the Oceans in order to perpetuate its importance. In this way metal structures resembling sail and prow of the boats can be observed at this pier and the railings of the piers and stairs look like waves. These "waves" were elaborated with an optical illusion so that whoever passes and observes them seems to see them undulate. As regards the columns therein, they are covered with metal elements resembling harpoons. The lights were placed in such a way as to value the entire environment described. The Oriente station or Oriente station is based on a point of convergence of the entire public transport network and serves the whole of eastern Lisbon, linking services such as the metro, the train, the buses and the taxis. Those who travel there in their own car will also not have great difficulty parking since there are several parks where you can arrange it. Around it can be visited areas of the city that have been recently rehabilitated as is the case of the riverside area, where some housing districts were built. Its driving force is the Parque das Nações, which gave rise to Expo 98, as already mentioned. In this place you can find various attractions such as gardens and parks with panoramic views over the Vasco da Gama Bridge. You can also visit the Oceanarium, the Pavilion of Knowledge as well as the Atlantic Pavilion, where great concerts are held. Here you can also visit the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center, with a large number of shops and restaurants. Near this place can also be found other points of public interest that not just places of entertainment. In this way we can enumerate the following: the Fourth Station of Security to the Public Transports, the Gare Pharmacy of the East, the Hospital of Santa Maria and the Firemen Sapadores of Lisbon. Whoever visits the city of Lisbon where this gare is located can also be housed in one of the several hotels that are...
Read moreThe roof of the Oriente train station is a masterpiece by the Catalan architect Santiago Calatrava. A renowned architect and engineer, Calatrava left his unique style in Parque das Nações, which combines materials such as concrete, glass and steel, while maintaining visible structures that other architects hide. At Gare do Oriente he created a large structure with an elegant and light appearance, which to some reminds some of a grove of metallic trees and to others the columns and arches of a Gothic cathedral. The Calatrava dash is the perfect door to the art gallery located inside the Oriente Metro station (red line). Inaugurated on May 19, 1998, the station is designed by architect. Sanchez Jorge and plastic interventions by 11 artists representing the 5 continents, which were inspired by the central theme of Expo 98 -The Oceans. Oriente station was very well designed to offer passengers a lot of practicality. With well-distributed services, Oriente Station has 5 floors as follows: on the highest floor is the Train Station, on the lowest level is the Metro Station and on the ground is the access to the Bus Station. In addition, on the other floors are parking, ticket offices, waiting rooms, restaurants and access to Shopping Vasco da Gama, one of the best...
Read moreThe lift to the top floor took at least 6 minutes to take me up one floor! For some reason it goes from the bottom floor to the top floor and only then it picks up people from the middle floor when it’s on it’s way down! What an engendering marvel! Why can’t it just pick me up when it’s going up? Next, the security guys are rude and useless not to mention their disregard for the facility where they work since I saw two securities walking past a hot dog which someone dropped and didn’t even call the cleaners to deal with it and it was quite desgusting, but it seems about right since the whole facility is dirty. Lack of signage is just mind boggling and different ticket offices at different ends of the middle floor make this place the biggest joke. Lastly, I was also waiting for a train which was delayed 3 HOURS and since I was tired I though I could lie down and take a little nap. HOW WRONG I WAS! apparently people cannot sleep in their facility! Even though they are a transportation platform where people are constantly waiting for transports! That’s all I guess...unless there’s no other option...you won’t catch me there...
