The only museum in town, and what a gem it is! I had no knowledge of human activity around Matterhorn before this, so this was an educational experience. Other than the heart of the museum - the tragic first successful ascent of the mountain - there were many other fascinating displays: a light-up box showing famous regions along the mountain, a reconstruction of the historical (and still existing) hotel the mountain climbers stayed in and local animal models among many more. I particularly enjoyed the portraits and photographs of historical figures collected throughout the museum. Those guys - and some gals - sure knew how to pose! There was also an adjacent exhibition on the role women played here (in the form of added placards by permanent artefacts, not really a temporary exhibition in itself), which added some depth to the perspective presented. There are also two different audio guides available for free on an external guide app you can download on your phone, one from the perspective of one of the men who first climbed the Matterhorn. At the end of the museum there is a space, as part of the temporary exhibition, which invites visitors to leave written and audio messages on gender equality. Backpacks are not allowed in the museum; but there are a small amount of lockers you can use for free. My key came with a cute baseball keychain attached! Everything was well-labeled, which only made this one particular discovery of an unexplained doll (see photos) particularly chilling. Jokes aside, this is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon (the museum only opens at 3pm) in Zermatt if you're not in the mood for the outdoors.

As far as local history museums go, this is one of the best anywhere. It helps that the subject matter is so iconic. The museum focuses on the scaling of the Matterhorn, and how the town culture developed around Alpine climbing. You'll find all sorts of artifacts like the original ropes and ice axes used to climb the matterhorn. The museum has three levels. The first is the main entrance, ticket booth, and gift shop. There are lockers to leave bags and hangars for jackets. The second level is below the street and is a metal grate walkway with historical items. The deepest and final level has the largest selection of artifacts and information. An audio guide is available in many languages but you'll need to download an app. Staff is minimal but does speak English.

This is a small museum displaying of how people from Zermatt lived in the old days & telling the history of the climbers trying to climb the Matterhorn. The entrance is on the ground level & the actual museum is on the lower ground floor. Our first feeling when we walked down the stairs was.... it was so damp inside! It has many displays, I particularly loved the interior of the old houses & the animals (i.e. Blacknose sheeps) displays. Unfortunately, overall the exhibition was not our cup of tea but it's still good for us to understand a bit more of the local culture & history of Zermatt. In my opinion, it's highly recommended for those who are interested in local history & especially for those who have a Swiss Travel Pass.

Expensive entry to see some pixelated images on screens and in an outdated environmemt. I did find the info interesting, but is seems the museum has not been modernized since the 80s, and does not seem fair to ask for so much given the quality of the exposition. They kinda wanted to make some awareness on gender inequality throughout the exposition and space, but it was not integrated into the exposition and somehow is just some noise and feminism-washing. Go invest your 10 Fr on overpriced wine in a posh restaurant

If you want to understand the history of climbing, this is your heaven. If you have swiss museum pass and want to discover yet another place it will take you 10 minutes. Light system was not working on the day we visited and therefore they were giving a discount. Had to use phone flashlight to illuminate some parts. Liked the availability of free lockers. Water available at a lovely fountain just steps outside the museum. Have seen much more interractive history museums.

This is one of the most unique museums we've ever visited, and we absolutely loved it. It offers a fascinating insight into the history of Zermatt, the daring hiking expeditions to the Matterhorn, and the equipment used by climbers over the years. One of the highlights is a dedicated room showcasing an engaging documentary, which adds depth to the experience. It's a must-visit for museum enthusiasts, and a perfect way to spend time, especially on a rainy day!
