I recently enjoyed a delightful 4-day, 3-night stay at Hotel Alpina in Zermatt, and it was an exceptional experience. The hotel's charming ambiance, combined with its central location, made it the perfect base for exploring this picturesque Alpine village. From the moment I arrived, the staff at Hotel Alpina made me feel welcome with their warm hospitality and attentive service. My room, though cozy, was comfortable and offered stunning views of the Matterhorn, which was a breathtaking sight each morning. During my stay, I had the pleasure of visiting several key attractions in Zermatt. The Matterhorn Museum - Zermatlantis provided fascinating insights into the history and culture of the region, including the legendary first ascent of the Matterhorn. I also took a memorable trip on the Gornergrat Railway, which offered panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Strolling along Bahnhofstrasse was a treat, with its charming shops, inviting cafes, and a variety of dining options. The proximity of the hotel to the ski lifts and cable cars made it incredibly convenient for accessing the slopes and enjoying some of the best skiing in the Alps. I also appreciated visiting the Church of St. Mauritius and the poignant Mountaineer's Cemetery, which added a deeper cultural and historical dimension to my visit. Exploring the numerous hiking and biking trails around Zermatt was another highlight, providing a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty of the region. Each day was filled with activities and discoveries, all easily accessible from Hotel Alpina. Overall, my stay at Hotel Alpina was a wonderful blend of comfort, convenience, and captivating experiences in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone planning to visit Zermatt.

Definitely Backpackers style, not suitable for mature travellers with higher expectations. The following is a list of what we found wrong for us; - Curtains were totally see through, not suitable for a shared balcony , with other room overlooking all around . Also no curtain at all in the bathroom. - no fridge, coffee making facilities - shower in bath that was about 8-10 inches of a step up from the top of the toilet (too bigger step for wet conditions) - 1 pillow only with elevation of about 1 inch - lift only stopped between floors, so had to carry luggage up or down stairs ???? - it's the only hotel I have ever stayed in where there is a warning stuck to the bathroom wall warning you if you get make-up on towels/ face washers you will be charged. ( thought towels/face washers were for washing your face etc. - bottom sheet was not linen it felt and looked more like a synthetic mattress protector. - there was machinery stored in a dilapidated shed thing just outside out balcony door. On a first story room. - no room to put an open suitcase - floor was uneven so your head felt downhill in bed -the balcony floor was cement and was broken and chipped (trip hazard) We were travelling for 6 weeks in total and this was the worse hotel we stayed in by far. I tried to upgrade but was told that was not possible. I had done my research and was totally surprised by the state of the room. Maybe they have an old part and a newer part? But this room was very disappointing, to be honest I have stayed in much better cabins in Caravan Parks and paid considerably less.

Good value hotel with some local character e.g. wood panelling. It’s central, less than 10 minutes walk to train stations and to gondola station (opposite directions) and just off both the main street and the river walkways. While easy to find, the last few steps are confusing, there is a small sign that indicates check in at the Tannenhof hotel, said sign is less prominent than another sign that says check in at Alpina (older sign which needs to come down?). Front desk was pleasant. We arrived at 12:30 PM and could not get into room early but desk pointed the way to nice restrooms and where to store bags at Alpina. This was in museum-like “living room” which had the cool appearance of having been last used by Frank Sinatra or Kruschev i.e. cool old 60’s call buttons on wall and plush velvet worn out chairs, kind of cool, looks like nobody uses but to store bags. Our room had nice shower, bed, etc. Clean too. Amusingly, the old elevator stops at 1/2 floors so no matter the floor, you walk half a flight down to your room’s hallway. Could not decipher why it was engineered that way. Rest assured, it’s not like the Being John Malkovich movie, you can walk standing upright. Alpina worked well for us, would recommend it to friends.
