The food hall looks like some attempt has been made to raise the aspirations of this sorry looking place. If you approach from this side you'll get excited expecting lots of choice of fresh produce with perhaps the odd wine bar and restaurant tucked away in its midst. However, despite a good design you quickly realise that it's just for the meat, fish and deli's. There's a couple of butchers, two deli's and at least one fish monger. Wares were presented well. The Sherwin's deli had a particularly good selection of (mostly British) cheese. However, when you walk out into the covered market your heart sinks. There's a lot of tat shops catering for the worst habits of humans - I'm thinking particularly of the store for cannabis users (don't pretend it's for anything else). The vegetables and fruits are laid out in bowls that seem to mostly cost £1. In fairness on examination most of this fruit and veg looked reasonable quality and I did buy 8 granny Smith's for a pound! However, the general feel was one of neglect and left you wanting to get out as quickly as possible rather than take your time choosing veg for your meals. This is sadly like so many British markets. In a very sad way and seemingly going nowhere apart from extinction. The council needs to look at some continental examples to get some inspiration of what a destination...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing for getting some fresh fruits and vegetables. The prices here are very competitive, what's more, I would rather call them cheap, especially if I take into consideration the high quality, size and taste of the products that can be found here. We've tried a couple of things: mangoes, figs, blackberries, etc and were not disappointed. Everything was fresh, looking yummy and tasting even more delicious. Since the number of markets of this sort in the UK is shrinking, this is a true gem that deserves the attention of the public including not just the locals. I've visited it on my day-trip from Cambridge, but after discovering its real value, I'll definitely return here in...
Read moreI, We, have not been to Leicester outdoor market since the big change and individual stalls. It has a totally different 'feel' about it. What surprised me the most, is an unsettling quietness about the Outside Market. We moved to a Tiny Village 31 years ago. We always came to the Market once a week or more. The hustle and bustle were new to us, but we loved it. We thought it may be similar? It is, but, on the other hand, totally different. The Large Oranges are Delicious, so are the Apples, and Monkey Nuts, not leaving out the Tangerine's. Also New Potatoes. I loved the Older Stalls, one knew each other and their customers. I suppose it will get a little getting...
