📍 Principal Hotel, York 📍 Did you know that if many hotels offer great discounts if you stay on a Sunday night? We were able to stay in this junior suite in the 4⭐ Principal Hotel in York at a 50% discount. What's more, because we used our @Hotels.com reward night, we were able to reduce the amount we paid to a total of £20!!! The hotel, gym and spa were great and the staff super helpful! Would stay again. #affordableluxury #hotelsuite #4starhotel #york #yorkhotels #wheretostayinyork #vegantravel #vegantraveltips #budgettravel #yorkengland #principalyork #affordablehotel #traveltips #hotelsdotcom #lowcosttravel #lowcosttravel #wanderlust

Room tour of our hotel in York. We stayed in The Milner York formally knows as The Principle. Its literally attached to the train station its a veey grand old building with amazing rooms over looking beautiful gardens & York Minster. Its around 5-10 minute walk from the centre, perfect location. The rooms are amazing and we got breakfast to our room the next day. We will 100% stay here again.

We visited The Milner York to celebrate a special family occasion — my great auntie and uncle’s 60th wedding anniversary — and it couldn’t have been more perfect. We booked a private function space, the Ebor Room (named after the iconic Ebor racing festival), and it was absolutely beautiful: spacious, filled with natural light, tastefully modern, and adorned with stunning chandeliers. From the moment we made our booking to the day of the event, everything was truly seamless. The team went above and beyond, offering thoughtful suggestions to personalise the day and making sure every detail was tailored just for us. They were completely invested in making it special, even helping us coordinate the surprise element of the celebration when timing was crucial. Steve was an absolute star, anticipating our needs before we even voiced them. We felt genuinely looked after, with regular check-ins from the team to ensure everything was just right. Thanks to Steve, Will, and Annabel, we didn’t have to lift a finger. Their attentive table service and warm hospitality meant we could fully relax and enjoy the occasion. The food was a highlight. We chose their chocolate-inspired afternoon tea, which celebrates York’s rich chocolate heritage. Every treat was a creative twist on classic favourites — like the ‘Strawberry Dream’ cheesecake, inspired by Quality Street’s strawberry delight, and the ‘Orange’ chocolate delice, a nod to the beloved orange creme. Alongside the sweet treats were delicious savoury bites, including freshly-baked cheese and caramelised onion tarts (still warm!) and a selection of traditional British sandwiches. And of course, no afternoon tea is complete without scones, clotted cream, and preserves. Even our fussy five-year-old guest loved the kids’ afternoon tea — he nearly polished it all off! The Ebor Room came with a Bluetooth speaker, so we could play our own music and create an even more personal atmosphere. To top it all off, we were able to watch the Grand National in the hotel’s restaurant on a large screen before returning to our private space to continue celebrating. A lot of planning went into this event, and having everything perfect truly mattered to us. The Milner York exceeded our expectations and helped make the day unforgettable. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them for a private function — and we’ll certainly be returning for our next celebration.

This was our first visit to the Principle, York and we wasn't disappointed. Parking is straight forward, with amble room. The check in staff were very polite and helpful. Our room wasn't quite ready, this wasn't a problem as we had arrived early, we just headed off to Thor's Bar, that sits in the grounds of the Principle, at the front of the hotel. Our room was on the 3rd floor, looking over the Castle which was nice. The room had everything that you would need for an overnight stay, a very comfortable bed, and is surprising quiet as your are not far from a busy main road and train station. The hotel itself is lovely, modern and old melded together beautifully. You are about a 10 minute walk into the center of York, and everything is signposted really well so places are easy to find. As you can imagine York was busy, with queues for Betty's Tearoom winding it way around the little square that's its situated in. Always best to book this time of year, unless you like a long wait to be seated.. We had a slow walk round taking in the sights, but if it's photos you want of quieter street then I suggest you get up early of go back later in the evening, which is what we did. There's still plenty of people about but not to many that you can't get some good shots. The Principle is a great hotel, it has a great location, food is amazing, and has a very friendly atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit.

The Principal is a very grand period hotel, I was booked in quickly and my room looked great. It has some nice touches like a vanity mirror hidden within a large table and large bathroom. Sadly the bathroom window needs repairing/repainting and the shower doors need descaling but they’re just cosmetic issues. The view from my SSW facing room looks out over York station to trees, it’s lovely. I left the windows open while I was out because the room was extremely warm with the evening sun but I eventually had to close the windows because of the train announcements and train noise. The mattress in room 331 desperately needs flipping, it slops towards the window. I also had to take the duvet out of the cover because the room was so warm, which is a shame because the bed linen is a nice quality. I didn’t sleep well but a yoga session and a the shower made up for it this morning. My breakfast was very good; the fruit salad was lovely, I could’ve eaten it twice. I also enjoyed the toast, tomatoes, mushrooms and hash-browns. Th team in the breakfast room were all really friendly. It’s a shame I had to go to work, I needed a nap after such a big breakfast! Checkout was quick and efficient too, although I’m still waiting for the receipt to be emailed to me, I have called twice. I’d happily stay again at the Principal, the location is excellent and the corporate rate I got was very good.
