We love second hand book stores and this is probably the best we've been to!
We went during the Covid pandemic and so they had strict rules on numbers of people inside. They gave us a time to stay till and said that if we hear a gong after that time to go downstairs to pay and leave as someone else would be waiting. It was a simple but effective system but we would love to visit during normal times as we both think we could have stayed here for a whole day exploring the shelves!
Inside is five floors crammed to the brim with books from all ages, subjects and rarities. If you are looking for a particular subject or author the chances are it will be in here. If you want something cheap, many books are just a couple of pounds, or you can find rare limited first editions for over ÂŁ100! You can even find books signed by your favourite authors.
It's not just books though. Inside you will learn about the history of the building and the area, you will find maps and other intriguing decorations and you can bring in your old tatty books to be rebound.
By far my favourite thing was the tiny book earrings! Apparently they held a staff competition to bind the smallest books and now the winner has started making the most adorable earrings!
If you're a lover of books or anything a little quirky, this is a must see...

Ok ok. I have been living in Buxton for a long time, what looks like ages ago. I remember Bakery on top of HH when that was a thing. This is how many years back I lived in Buxton. Back then there was not even Tesco. And even then I didn't visit this place even once. But it was there. Untill today.
And I felt like I was in Narnia. You stepping into different world. Universe. Dimension. I thought it's only few shelfs with books. But then I saw signs saying more books this way... And flip me there was! Book about everything wrote by anyone about every possibile subject. Heck you probably find in gardening book about growing your own vegan gluten free water.
This is truly amazing place and I will visit it again. Ended up with two books, being brought back to my childhood memories where I was registered in 5 libraries around my home village to which I rode often on bike. Because there wasn't enough books for me to read in my village. I will visit it again. This time with better weather for sure. As I probably came in what looks like coldest day in Buxton for a...
Read moreMy experience with Scrivener’s Books was not a good one. I paid 60 pound for a book (including shipping) through Abe’s Books. Then I get an email saying “Oh would you believe it, there’s a minor flaw in the book but we can give you a refund if you want.” So I accept their offer. I am not given a full refund, but only about 70%. Why? Because Scrivener’s told Abe Books that the reason for a refund was that I did not want the book. Er, no. I emailed Scrivener’s. Did I get a reply? No. Did they make any effort to give me back my money? Not that I could tell. I had to waste my time getting in touch with Abe’s Books, who resolved the issue. Verdict: on a number of counts, pretty hopeless. They didn’t describe the book accurately in the first place; they gave the wrong reason for a refund; and they didn’t contact me or help me get the outstanding portion of my money back.
