We rented from Avis at LAX and had a very disappointing experience. The first car we were given seemed fine at first, but on the way to Disneyland we noticed it pulled hard to the right. Out of caution, we stopped at the Anaheim Avis to see if we could swap vehicles.
The employee there (an older gentleman) was abrupt and rude from the start. With our toddler and all his belongings in the car, I simply asked if a swap was possible. Instead of offering any help, he barked at my husband to park the car and bring the keys inside. Once inside, he barely spoke to us, handed us another car, and rushed us out without explanation.
The replacement car was in terrible condition. Immediately we saw a huge dent and a cigarette burn in the back seat. It already had over 40,000 miles, and it was clear the vehicle had not been properly inspected or maintained. My husband wisely took a full video of the car before we left. When we went back inside to ask if the damage could be documented, the employee just brushed us off with, “take photos.”
Things only got worse from there. The gas tank wasn’t full, and on our way to Long Beach, my husband scraped his arm while loading our toddler, and we discovered the entire tail light was completely busted — again, something clearly visible in the video from the time of rental. That is a major safety hazard and should never have been allowed to go out on the road. On drop-off, we also found an actual hole in the driver’s floor, adding yet another serious issue. Between the broken tail light, the dent, the cigarette burn, the mileage, and the literal hole in the floor, this was one of the worst-maintained vehicles I’ve ever seen rented.
When we arrived at the Long Beach Avis, the staff there were shocked that this car had ever been released to a customer. Thankfully, AJ at Long Beach immediately helped us. She was kind, professional, and made sure we were swapped into a safe car. She’s the only reason I’m giving any positive feedback in this review — she truly deserves recognition for how she handled the situation.
Overall, this was an extremely stressful rental experience that could have been avoided with proper inspection and better customer service at Anaheim. I hope Avis takes this feedback seriously, because handing over unsafe cars to families with children is...
Read moreExtremely rude customer service from Luis, as well as inadequate cleaning up on pickup of vehicle. At first, I thought I was getting good service as I was upgraded from a Kia sedan to a VW crossover, however, I realized the reason I was given the "upgrade" was because the car wasn't clean. I picked it up dirty and I figured it was fine, I took pictures.
I ended up using the car for a band practice, and when I moved the seats to load my gear, I found a BULLET. .223 Calibur to be exact.
Driving around with that, unknowingly, could have been highly problematic for me as their customer, especially in California.
Upon return I informed Luis, who may I add was already rude to the customers ahead of me, and he seemed very dismissive. Didn't apologize or say anything really.
After giving the keys back, he just gave me a receipt. Didn't really explain anything to me about the $300 hold that they put on my credit card and when it would be coming back, and also didn't want to do a walk around with me. I found that very odd because every time I rented a car they have walked around with it and did a checklist. He told me just to take pictures of it myself.
I informed him I didn't want to be charged later because Of inability to check on their part due to the fact I found A BULLET in the back. Once again he just repeated to take pictures of it myself and I said okay, I will and I will definitely be leaving a review.
After reading some of the other reviews here and on yelp, it seems like Luis is a consistent problem. I'm not sure why he's still allowed to behave like this without being talked to. They're also wasn't any soap in the bathroom which leaves me to believe that the employees wash hands with no soap. So I would definitely use antibacterial wipes on the cars when you receive them. I also noticed that the air conditioning was not working and everyone inside seemed set which I totally understand, But that sounds like that should be a complaint brought up to the owners and not pushed down on your customers.
Please see attached for the photo of said bullet (as well as the trash they...
Read moreHidden fees - Beware! I booked my reservation through Expedia for Avis Car Rental in Anaheim. This was my first car rental experience and honestly I will NEVER go back to Avis. First off, the man at the front counter was SO rude. My sister is the one that booked the car (i hate driving on highways) and due to her just being recently married and her credit card not matching her license, he had a nasty attitude and refused to work with us. Fine. She tried showing him different forms of ID's with her maiden name on it and even another card with her married name and he wouldn't have it. Whatever. Fast forward he gets all of my information and then informs me that I will be charged $200 for a deposit (no where on Expedia does it say this). After showing him how Expedia did not show this, he ended up taking my social for a credit check to bi-pass this. I wish he would have just offered this in the beginning because it would have saved us $20. We had questions making sure that my sisters card wouldn't be charged since that's what he had on file and he said he wouldn't be there when we returned it so he didn't care. RUDE. He then takes a phone call, completely ignores us while were signing paperwork, and just hands us a key. We walked out by the car and there were dents and bumps all over the car (he didn't go over this with us) so we took pictures to make sure we didn't get charged. The tank was full, however, it took us about an hour to figure out how to get the gas tank opened the next day to fill it back up. Needless to say, being my first car rental experience I was very disappointed in the workers customer service. Oh also - the plug for phone chargers would not work in this car. Both of our phones died and thankfully we have some sort of sense of directions. We informed them on this and they said fixing those are not mandatory. My sister told them that it was in fact mandatory that they should look into fixing it because people from out of town rent cars and should a car charging port not work, we would lose sense...
