I stayed at the HILTON DOWNTOWN AUSTIN this past weekend and ate at this restaurant twice. The first time was good. The second time was awful. As a matter of fact, if my second visit would have been my first, there would never have been a 2nd visit. Three issues: 1. I ordered the rosemary focaccia appetizer (even their bread is a la carte). It appeared to be three slabs of bread with the top and bottom sliced off and toasted. The pieces of bread that were brought to the table with uneven trimmings that looked like the chef cut off parts that were burned. Upon closer examination, it became obvious that they attempted to hide the charcoal colored black side of the bread by placing the burned side down on the wood serving tray. All pieces of bread looked like black burnt toast on one side. I don't understand why they would think it acceptable serving an inedible dish, by hiding it burned side down. Lack of pride in what they served perhaps? I don't believe this was a mistake as it was obvious that one of the 3 pieces was trimmed on the topside to be more presentable while the bottom side was like the stuff you scrape off a grill. 2. I ordered the margherita pizza. In addition to the pool of grease in the center of the pizza, it had a strong taste of LEMON. After one bite, I was done. When the waitress came to the table at the end of the meal, I shared the burnt bread and lemon pizza issue. The kind manager came to my table indicating that she "understood that there were challenges". The manager indicated that the kitchen may not have cleaned a utensil (shredder?) between a lemon dish and my pizza. She offered me another meal but by that time, it was late, and the other person in my party was finished eating. The manager then asked if she could get me a dessert. I inquired about the desserts and an item that was not on the menu ... I was informed the additional item could be ordered. 3. Sometime later, the server came to the table and took our dessert order. Dessert was satisfying; until the bill came. The dessert that I thought the manager offered me for the 'challenges' was actually on the bill. When the manager asked me if she could get me a dessert, I took that as a goodwill offer. It could be a misunderstanding on my part, but then why would the manager have been the one who offered? Not wanting to make an uncomfortable scene in front of my guest, I paid the bill and left. I won't be back in Austin for another year; maybe the bad taste in my mouth will diminish by the time I return. FYI - arrived at 7:30 pm - only a one or two other tables...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe only reason this place is still open is that itās at the bottom of a hotel and they have a captive audience. You assume that at the bottom of a Hilton in downtown Austin, and by the prices on the menu, this would be an excellent restaurant. The only thing worse than the food is the service. I had a reservation at 5:30, and walked through the bar to get to the completely empty host stand and a restaurant that was a ghost town. I shouldāve known right then and there to just go to the taco joint next-door. Instead, after about five minutes, I was finally seated. Iām so glad I was able to purchase items from the happy hour menu, because if I had paid full price for anything at this restaurant, I wouldāve had major buyers remorse. The Caesar salad was okay. The baked brie was a huge disappointment. Crunchy and overcooked on the outside, and just a blob of a mess on the inside. The crackers served with this mess were plain and dry and we had to ask for anything they had that was a sweet compliment that is usually part of this dish. We also ordered the barbecue chicken pizza that was soggy and had so little chicken that it was just cheese. I secretly told the server that it was my friendās birthday and that I wanted to surprise her with a dessert. He told me he would take care of it. So the next thing I knew, he was bringing our check after we waited around for so long that I just gave up. My friend was back anyway and I gave up on the surprise. $117 Plus a tip later, we just got out of there. I wonāt be back and I donāt recommend this place. I really wish there were more reviews that honestly reflect the huge disappointment that this restaurant is. I...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAbsolutely do not recommend!! Seven of us went there to celebrate my grandsonās graduation & it was the absolute worst dining experience. The waitress came over & only took a few drink orders & walked off. We had to ask her for the remaining drinks when she returned after a long while. She had an unpleasant disgusted look the entire time. She finally took our food order, but my grandson was in the bathroom when she did & never returned to ask for his order. He finally had to go find her at her station to give her his order.
In the meantime, we ordered appetizers which were served by a young waiter who got annoyed because my phone was on the table which we moved immediately. He put the tray down & actually said āGOD DAMN ITā to me! We were shocked, to say the least.
I had asked waitress for sweet tea which she finally brought me, however, it wasnāt sweet. I got her attention & asked her if they had sweet tea. She turned around without a word and walked off.
My daughter had already gotten up to complain to a manager, but didnāt find one. She complained to someone else & asked him to send the manager over who never came.
The waitress eventually reappeared with a small container of sugar, put it down, but no words except to argue with me about our complaint.
We eventually got another waitress who came to our table once. Getting our check & paying took forever to get taken care of. We were nothing but friendly & happy until it quickly went sour. My opinion is my husband should not have paid...
