Beautiful island of nature in the city. Planned future site of $4 Million "transit center" funded by TxDOT. Will probably be constructed in 2018 according to my sources. This will mainly be a showplace for the underwhelming MetroRail system that terminates on 4th St between the convention center and Brush Square. I worry that they will kill the beautiful old trees, and all for what? If you want to spend all that cash why not just make a short subway line and put the transit center above it? A subway through downtown can be extended westward from the current terminus all the way to the Amtrak station and U-P rail line on the west side of Lamar about a mile west. The city needs a major upgrade to MetroRail: improvements are scheduled but underfunded; the plans indicate the result will be insufficient to meet demand into the next decade, but then CapMetro has always done this on the cheap, refusing to make the financial commitment needed to make Austin a transit-oriented city.
