My husband and I visited Acadia National Park recently. I was looking for a book on the history of Schoonic that the park service did not have at their Hull’s Cove visitors center. The park service employee referred us to Shermans. When I entered the bookstore there was a young man with his hair drawn back and a young lady who was all smiles and ready to help. She went above and beyond and was very patient with me as I mispronounced Schoonic. This rating is no reflection on her what so ever. Had she been my only encounter this would be a 5 star rating. Rather the arrogance of the young man who had his hair pulled back is another story and the reason for the rating being so low. He had an obvious air of arrogance about him. I’m not sure if it was due to my mispronunciation or what the exact issue may have been. There was a roll of his eyes when I shared my story of how I came to be there and he left the front counter. Then to be more insulting was completely silent and obviously put off when my husband asked if they offered a military discount. I wouldn’t think this an unusual question as this was the birthplace for the National Guard. Truthfully if I would have found the same book somewhere else in town today, I would have returned my purchase to Sherman’s. I feel sorry for this young man and whatever he may be going through however his actions reflect very poorly...
Read moreMy daughter and I were visiting Bar Harbor on vacation. We stopped in to find a hardbacked sketch book to press leaves and flowers we found on our trip. The banned book display on the outside was extreamly well done. We went in and asked the staff about the display and they engaged us and broke it all down for us.we hung out for a while and witnessed the employee addressing some of the people wearing masks they were nice about it and even offered mask to those who did have one. Most people were super cool about it and some accepted the mask and said thanks. We noticed one person simply leave and another guy get visibly angry and throw the stuff on the counter and throw a little fit. The employee was a little visibility shaken but he carried on in a very professional matter. After that we needed help finding our book, we asked, the nice lady (I forgot her name) helped us find a cool Van Gogh cover sketch book on sale for like 10 bucks. Very cool store I will definitely come back next time I'm...
Read moreI love Sherman’s Books, so of course, while in Bar Harbor, Maine, I had to stop by to visit the original location!
Located right at 56 Main Street in Bar Harbor, you can’t miss this shop! The store is HUGE! It’s almost broken up into three sections. On the far left is a gift shop with loads of goodies like jewelry, gifts, and household items. The middle section has toys and kids books. The far right side is all books.
Before we walked in, we checked out the window displays. They had an awesome banned book window that was quite the conversation starter! A gentleman from Sherman’s named Art came out to talk to us about the banned books for awhile while we were standing outside on the sidewalk.
While our group was looking at them, we talked to at least four other people about it as they walked by or went to enter the shop.
Definitely a must-visit when...
