JFK/UMass is a popular station on the MBTA Red Line in Boston. As a transportation hub, it provides access to the University of Massachusetts Boston, as well as the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. The station has undergone renovations in recent years and now features updated amenities, including improved accessibility and a new pedestrian bridge.
The platform area is clean and well-maintained, and the station is staffed by friendly and helpful attendants. The station also offers a convenient park and ride lot for commuters who prefer to drive.
One of the unique features of JFK/UMass is the stunning view of the Boston skyline from the platform. The view alone is worth the stop, even for those who are not using the station to transfer to other modes of transportation or visit the nearby attractions.
Overall, JFK/UMass is a well-designed and efficient station, with excellent amenities, and it serves as a gateway to some of Boston's most popular...
Read moreWell, aside from LITERALLY KILLING SOMEBODY a little ago who fell to his death on one of the many decrepit staircases at this station, it's a functional station to put it best, at least for changeovers between the Ashmont and Braintree Branches of the Red Line. On the other hand, it's HORRIBLE for connections between the Red Line, Commuter Rail and buses: there's one gigantic walkway that takes you from the Red Line entry level, which is the second floor of the station on the height of Columbia Road, and brings you to/from the bus connection area, Commuter Rail area and Morrissey Boulevard. In DECADES since this station has existed, and especially since the Commuter Rail was brought back in the late 1990s, NOBODY at MBTA/MassDOT has thought to build a staircase DIRECTLY off the main walkway down to the Commuter Rail and buses??!! I guess if you can barely maintain the staircases that already exist, it's not worth it to...
Read moreThe building is starting to show its age. The ticketing systems are typical of the current MBTA system. There's never route maps to pick up for new residents or visitors. The speaker system doesn't always work to announce which train is arriving. The inbound line can appear at either side of the station which demands travellers to stay up in the lobby area until the digital sign shows which way to go. The elevators unfortunately are highly fragrant of urine! Like, I need to take the elevators and wish I could take the stairs!
There's handicap parking only here, but also a drop and pick-up lane. Blue bikes, UMass electric bikes, buses 8, 16, & 41, and a hotel pick-up are available here. This is also where you'll find the commuter rail line outside the main station on the bus side.
The station is convenient for public transit once you're familiar...
